Christmas gifts--too cheap?

I have managed to spend most of the Christmas budget on stuff for the kids (as per DHs instructions).  Now I have not much money and plenty of gifts to still get. In order to spend the bulk of it (under $300) on DH and the parents, I'm wondering if it would be too cheap of me to just make some snacky food for DH and Is siblings.  My sister we see pretty often, she asked for giftcards and lotto tickets.  One of my brothers we see maybe once a month, there is only one thing on his list under $50.  My other brother, I see maybe twice a year, no clue what to get him.  DHs sister lives 17 hours away, we see her maybe once a year.  So if I make snacks, maybe throw in a little lotto ticket or two and some cute pictures of DDs, is that being too cheap?

Re: Christmas gifts--too cheap?

  • I kind of think so, unless you can make something really super cute and crafty.  I think you'd be better off getting like a $20 gift for each person, and the pictures of DD, and then spending the rest on the parents/DH.

  • So you have 4 siblings to buy for + H + parents?? And a $300 budget?

$100 on H, $100 on parents ($50 for each set), and $100 on siblings ($25/sibling). I would not give snack food.

  • I'd do baked goods, photos, and a $20-25 GC each.

  • There's no such thing as too cheap.  You've got a budget, stick to it.

  • Will they be buying gifts for you? If the expectation is that they are getting decent gifts for you, then yeah, I think snacks and a lottery ticket is cheap. Also, if your H insisted you spend most of the budget on the kids, then I'd say his gift is the first to be cut (and l would tell him to cut back on your gift, too.). Then use some of that extra money for the other gifts you need to buy. Or, return some of the gifts you bought for the kids.

This is why I am so glad we don't exchange gifts with the adults in my family.
