Saw ped this morning.
Referred to a therapist so we can get some strategies under way (more for us than for DS). The ped said it is anxiety related to choices; his analytical brain is functioning at a more advanced age than his "frog brain" and it is paralyzing him and resulting in tantrums. The two therapists on the short list he selected because they will either give me things for the school or go to the school to work with the teachers.
It was interesting; the ped said that DS is calculating what occurs as the result of his choice, thinking for instance about what dinosaurs he already has at home and how that relates to what he likes to do with them, but his emotional development tops out and he just loses it. The ped said because he is really verbal I can SEE that happening and most kids at this age just lose it and their parents chalk it up to tantrums and don't seek any help because it looks like temper tanrums only.
He recommended we do this now; if he entered K and these issues were not addressed he would most likely be labelled ODD due the behaviors.
