Anyone else having due date concerns?

I'm 100% sure my due date is wrong.... I'm just wondering if anyone else is having this problem too, and if I should mention it to my doctor?! There was only 2 days I could've got pregnant in July.. With the due date I have, it would have me at getting pregnant at the end of June/early July.... I even looked back on my ultrasound pictures and looked at the measurements closely, and did research on average baby measurments.. They all add up to when I know my baby was made and definitely not in late June. But one of the ultrasound pictures pushed up the due date, and that's the due date they gave me.. I'm so confused. Lol

Re: Anyone else having due date concerns?

  • Is the due date significantly off from what you think it should be? Because only a few days doesn't make that big a difference.
You should address this with your doctor. They don't base it off of when you have sex, they base it off of the first day of your last period.

  • What they're dating *I think* are markers for growth. So on my ultrasound pics there were three different dates. They didn't even mention that I was measuring ahead at my last u/s, even though that's what it said on the screen, because at this points babies growth rates can vary wildly. Did you not have a dating u/s at around 12 weeks? Those are usually the most acurate.
  • One of my ultrasound results gave me a due date of April 3 as opposed to the initial April 23 due date. I know the exact date I conceived as it was a one hit wonder :), and I was gone away to work for a few weeks for the "April 3" due date so that could have been really awkward for my husband to hear ha ha. At my next appt I pointed it out and they realized it was just a typo, flagged and fixed it. This may not be the case for you but if it's a glaring difference bring it up. Won't make much of a difference either way as who knows when you will actually deliver anyway!

If it's a few weeks off then it will make a difference. What if she is 40 wks and they want to induce her because by their calculations she is 42 wks. But that being said, if her last period was the last week of June then that is what they are going to date it by.
  • Definitely talk to your doctor. It really i guess only matters if it's more than a few days. The whole last period thing always kinda confused me. Like my EDD was the 5th with the date of my last missed period, but time from conception would have been the 10th.

But my provider gave me the date of the 10th, so i didn't question it. Hope you get a better answer soon.
  • They go by your first u/s normally. If the u/s is withing 7 days of what it should be they will keep that due date. If it's off by more than 7 they will go by u/s.
  • My advice is go with the latest possible date to avoid them taking labor inducing measures prematurely. The baby is going to arrive when they want to!
Personal story-my last period ended on May 17th. So I'm estimating delivery should be somewhere mid-end February. However, I've had several ultrasounds and based on fetal measurements, the doctors have given me dates ranging from March 20 all the way up to April 3. So clearly they have me way later than my last period.

  • My friend was told she conceived on the 3rd of September , since her husband was away until the 13/14th of September it is fair to say it can be wrong , but she's still keeping her original due date because that's what they do !
  • Oh and he'd been away for 5 weeks prior to that too
  • Talk to your doc about it. My first ultrasound measured a week ahead. I went over dates with my doctor and I was away during that window. She kept my original due date instead of bumping it up. Normally it isn't a big deal since it is just an estimate, but I might go for a VBAC and a week could be the difference.

  • My first ultrasound and due date based on LMS were different but only by three days so my doctor just kept the due date we'd be using the whole time instead of changing it.

  • I also would recommend talking to your doctor. As pp mentioned, when you get close to your due date/go past they may want to induce when in reality you wouldn't even be due yet.

I haven't had this experience as I used a trigger shot, but I do know the LMP isn't always accurate if you don't ovulate until CD 20 or something it will be off.

Was the ultrasound an early one? I think the earlier ones are used to determine due dates where as later ones aren't? (Correct me if I'm wrong here) I would bring a calendar and circle the dates you had sex and talk with your doctor.

This. I'm baking an unusually large baby this time around and last week I asked my doctor if there was any chance my due date was incorrect and she said no. They get the most accurate measurement during your very first ultrasound. I guess, ask your doctor and see what they have to say about it...

  • I have been given 4 dates .. April 20th then April 25th then May 14th now May 8th . I always felt April 25th was the correct date . But it was very frustrating in the beginning. I'm type 1 diabetic so if she holds on in there till April 25th I will be very relieved . Although the dr and I spoke about having my C-section as soon as LO is strong enough to be born .

I didn't have a period since before my 19 month old was born, but based on my fertility charting and when we did the deed, I'm pretty sure my due date is a week later than my dating ultrasound results. If baby and I are doing fine, we'll simply refuse induction or any other interventions until we're at least a week past what we think is the due date.
Due dates are based on the average date of ovulation after the first day of the last period. If you consistently ovulate later than the average woman, that would account for a later due date.

I'm preparing to have a battle with my doctor about this. I'm supposed to be due 4/20. My anatomy scan said 4/16. He wants to move me back to 4/14?! I REFUSE to be induced that early just because my baby is measuring slightly bigger. H and I were both over 10 pound births. We are big people! I'm not getting induced way ahead of time just because baby is measuring slightly above average. That sounds INSANE to me. I want a fully cooked baby! I don't care at all what is more convenient for the hospital. I know when my LMP was and I am certain of the date I had sex. All this stuff about dates being off may apply to many people but it does not apply to me. I believe you should wait to give birth until baby is good and ready, and hospitals in this country are obsessed with unnecessary intervention just to cover their own asses. This can be unhealthy for you and baby. Edit : By "this country" I meant the USA. Sorry, American health practices piss me off to no end sometimes.

I agree that LMP is really not accurate but I understand that in most women it is The only way they can guess. However, I think an early ultrasound is much more accurate. When I had my first OB appointment they still asked me when my LMP was and took the time to calculate a due date even though I had done a trigger and knew within 12 hours when I ovulated! I thought that was silly and unnecessary of them. I had had 3 ultrasounds at 6w-9w to confirm where I measured too. It seemed like they still had to "check" with the LMP!

So, I agree that it seems some doctors trust this LMP too much!

I was charting and temping so I knew the exact day that I ovulated- my dr went by LMP but luckily it was only 1 day off. He has 4/2 as my due date in his charts but I always say 4/1 bc I know didn't ovulate on day 14. But it's just a day so in the grand scheme of things makes no difference whatsoever. If it was more than a week difference I would def, as pp have said, fight with the dr about it bc I would not want to be induced prematurely. I usually ovulate around day 20 so I was fully prepared to lie to the dr about my LMP so that it would correlate with my O date but luckily I didn't have to since I O'd close enough to day 14 lol
  • I had a similar issue and my midwives have been great about it. I talked to them at length about all of the conflicting dates. Based on LMP my due date would be March 17th. Based on 1st ultrasound, date is April 1. Based on level II ultrasound date is April 3. Based on NT scan date is March 24. My midwives are going with April 3, since it's both the latest date and was also an early level II ultrasound. They said this is to my advantage so that I don't have to be induced earlier than necessary.
  • I only worry about mine because I have to be induced and taken off of blood thinners.  Fortunately because I was IF, we know exactly when baby was conceived.  If you don't have any medical reason not to go into labor naturally, the date really doesn't much matter.  The baby will come when it wants, or as previously stated they will schedule induction if you go past 2 weeks.

  • I am in a similar situation but want a better EDD for different reasons.  I am looking to take a week or so off of work before the baby comes to spend with DD1 and just relaxing in general.  I just dont want to take 3 weeks off without pay beforehand.

Around here you don't get a early ultrasound routinely. You only get one if you are high risk, you develop concerning symptoms or you don't know when your last period was. The routine ultrasounds are the 20 week a/s and in some places a 36-38 week ultrasound to measure the baby. You can also have a ultrasound if you go over due. So here you would have to go by period not ultrasound. Maybe this is the case?

    Eta: quote box fail
  • My first due date was April 7, then with the first u/s it was April 1st but that would've pushed my conception week back to the week of my last period when I didn't have sex. So it seems it's based on the development / size of the baby how the date is calculated.
