Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Keeps her mouth shut!

We started solids right before 5 months per pedi's reco and DD did great. We went away on vacation for a week and doing solids was hard there (no place to seat her, etc.) so we skipped the week. Now, I'm trying to get her back to her solids and she isn't having it! She's literally just shuts her mouth tight and I can't even force it open with a spoon (NOT doing that again :(( And just now she started to wave her arms and grab the spoon. I'm giving her the foods that she loved a week ago... what happened and how can I fix this?? TIA

Re: Keeps her mouth shut!

  • My son refuses to be fed by us. He will only eat if the food is on a spoon he feeds himself, or something he can hold to bring to his mouth.

Force feeding a child won't get you anywhere.

I'd rather go with it and let him figure it out for himself. He enjoys his meals much better.

As PP said, try BLW or mash the food, put a bit on the spoon and hand it to your child. See how it goes :)

  • I agree, definitely don't force it. When I started cereal with LO he did a great job the first time and then wouldn't have anything to do with it the next couple of tries. I backed off for two weeks and tried again, and he was ready. Good luck!
  • My LO likes feeding herself.  If you are not ready to try finger foods, maybe put some food on a spoon and hand it to her or try one of those mesh feeders.  I give DD one of those when I need to keep her occupied and she loves it.

And if nothing works, just wait a couple of days and try again.
