We read "Big Enough for a Bed" (an Elmo storybook) for a few weeks in advance to prep. Then we did like Elmo and took her to the store to pick out sheets. She was super excited about the new sheets on her toddler bed. We're having a hard time getting her out of it, lol.
I see no reason to do it until her crib doesn't work for some reason (climbing out or whatever). We have had her sleep in normal beds with bed rails on vacations and she's done fine. I just see no reason to complicate my life if the crib isn't posing a problem.

We were not planning to do it for awhile but today Jeffrey woke up from his nap screaming - I ran into his room and he was on the floor!! He has not even tried climbing out of his crib before! Luckily the floor has carpet and a rug and he wasn't hurt! I am hoping the transition to a toddler bed is smooth bc he has been an awesome sleeper!!
We changed to a twin bed while on vacation in August and haven't looked back since. On the way home we stopped and got "Anna and Elsa" sheets and 2 pool noodles and that is how she has been sleeping ever since.
We switched back in June to a twin mattress and box spring on the floor - no rails or anything - which DD can comfortably climb in and out of by herself. We talked it up for about a month in advance and then just switched her one night and that was that. We have the crib still up in her room since we have another on the way and every once in a while when she is in a mood to fight bedtime, she will ask to sleep in the crib, but it's clearly a ploy to delay the inevitable and we don't give in.
My first (DS) switched to a queen bed on the floor at 15 months (since baby sister was coming - didn't want to buy a second crib). But I'm still nervous about switching DD!
She sleeps so well in her crib & will just lie in there not making a peep in the morning & after nap, even after she's awake. So, at this point I think we're waiting for a bit because I don't want to complicate my life. When she does switch, it will be to a twin trundle bed that we have. Maybe I'll do it in tandem with potty training (so she can get up at night if she needs to)? I don't know when that is going to happen either. Right now she's in the stage where she'll sometimes say she wants to go potty but once she gets on she freaks out and wants to get off immediately without doing anything.
DD is still in a crib. At this point, if it 'aint broke, I'm not going to fix it. Plus, there are other transitions that are more important for me at this point ... like weaning ... so I don't want to add one more thing to the mix.
When we visited my parents last month, she did sleep in a day bed that had 3 sides and we put a half rail on the "open" side. It worked, so I know it's doable.
But her crib does convert to a toddler bed (basically one side comes off), and then to a full size bed. I think a full size bed is kind of big. I think I'll take the side off her bed in a few months. Then hopefully we'll have a #2 in 2015. And by that point we will be ready for DD to be in a twin bed and LO #2 can have the crib back.

Baby Girl # 2 TTC Since June 2013 Got pregnant on our own without Fertility Treatments - January 2016! Thank you snow storm Jonas! EDD 10/15/16 At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid. Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth. If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP. My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!
We switched to a twin bed back last spring (March or April?) and he has done so well with it. I even took the guardrail off about a month ago since I watched him roll to the edge of the bed and start to fall but then catch himself in his sleep. I'm sure all kids are different though at when they're ready to switch. We're lucky it went so well! The only thing I miss about the crib is that he couldn't get out on his own. Some nights I have to put him back in bed at least 10 times
DD did really well, our only downside is that she will get up in the middle of the night and cry at our door because she wants to be with someone. If its in the middle of the night we bring her back to her room, bit I will admit, if its 5am and my alarm goes off at 5:35, I let her stay in my bed for some sleepy snuggles.
DS is still in a crib. I don't plan on switching him unless I need to. Recently though he has figured out how to take off his sleep sack so I assume crawling out isn't far behind (the sleep sack keeps him from lifting his leg over).
Eryn is still in her crib. We leave in 21 days for a month long Christmas vacation. I need to order her a mattress and box spring, so we can convert her crib to a double. I am planning on doing it when we get back. This is the longest any of them have stayed in a crib. DD1 switched at 20 months (because DD2 was born) DD2 switched at about fifteen months.
DD is still in her crib. She can take off her sleep sack but doesn't seem to have much interest in climbing out. She sleeps on a cot at daycare, and has slept in real beds with bed rails on trips, so I think she'd probably be fine if we converted her bed now, but I just don't see a reason to give her the ability to get out of bed yet if she doesn't seem to mind the crib.

UPDATE .... Well, DD climbed out of the crib this wekend. I didn't see it happen, but I'm guessing she laned on her forehead (based on her little mark and where she said it hurt). She did it while WAERING the sleep sack ... so apparently they CAN lift thier legs up just enough! I have the Graco Lauren crib. I really don't want to take the side off and put up a rail. But DH says he's rather be safe than sorry. :-( Now I just have to buy the rail ... since I don't think it came with one. I'll have to check.

@vic8504 - How do you keep the pool noodle from sliding? Does it fit under the fitted sheet? Just curious how this works. DD's fitted sheets are pretty snug, so I can't imagine fitting a noodle under the fitted sheet???

@Toni79 - Yes I put them on the edges of the bed and then just pull the fitted sheet down over them. Hers are tight too but that is good because it keeps them in place instead of sliding off the bed if she does roll into them.
