Formula Feeding Tips?

Hello my favorite internet moms!  I have been an EPer for months... LO hasn't ever had formula, so I feel like I have no clue what I am doing.  Before I got my BFP I had endometriosis.  I had to have surgery and lupron shots and I was on continuous birth control because I was in so much pain.  Got pregnant, had LO, was feeling great... until... I started my period back up. Now my endo pain is starting to come back with little twinges and then some severe pain every once in a while.  I would like to give up pumping and get back on continuous bc, but I truly don't know where to start with formula.  I asked the pedi and he gave some advice... but I need help with some confused FTM questions...

1. Do babies need more ounces in a bottle of formula over bm?
2. Do I use tap water or do I need special water to mix it?  (see how little I know!)
3. Any other things you wish you had know about formula, formula feeding, or the adjustment from breastmilk?
4. Other differences between bm and formula?

Any advice would be great... I've already had a shittastic week, so I am feeling super guilty about making the decision to stop pumping... but I feel like if I am going to have a shot at having another baby without the surgery and lupron shots again, this is what I have to do for my family.  Thanks

Re: Formula Feeding Tips?

  • I'm sorry you're hurting!

When I stopped eping my toddler two years ago, she drank the same in formula that she had in bm. We started slowly by making a bottle two thirds bm and one third formula and every couple of days upped the formula until she was on straight formula. She was happy to drink whatever was in the bottle as long as it was food.

When we started Charlie on formula he was much pickier. He flat out refused any bottle with the cheap formula, so we had to use name brand.

    We mix with tap water.

The poop is worse. Thicker and stinkier. Burps are also way more gross. We put a drop of gas drops in each bottle to kill the bubbles made when shaking and its awesome. Hope this helps!

  • I'll dissent. I don't like making a whole batch for the day because then I have to warm bottles. When I make one at a time, I just use warm tap water. Works like a dream for us.

  • Pumping for six months is great. I also had to quit for health reasons and while it was a tough decision, it is nice to have time back in my day.

As for advice, PP have great suggestions. I would also add to start with regular formula and move to gentle as I have heard it is hard to move from gentle to regular once you start. I inherited a Dr. Browns pitcher and it does a great job with very few bubbles. I am in the camp of make the formula the night before and pour into bottles. It is partially a control thing as our sitter would feed DS more than he needs if I gave her the chance.
