Feeding Times Question

LO is 4wks today and we are EFF now. I think this can be answered by EBF too.

When your baby eats, when is your baby ready to eat again? Is it two(whatever # here) hours from the start of the feeding or two# from the time s/he finishes?

Re: Feeding Times Question

  • I calculate from the start of a feeding. We EBF on demand do he next feeds when he's hungry...but during the day that is usually 2-3 hours (sometimes less than 2 when cluster feeding or in a growth spurt).

  • I always use from the beginning of a feeding.

Perfect. For whatever reason I was starting to question myself with timing from the beginning of a feeding.

  • Beckham seems to eat more during the day, so I don't even pay attention to time. At night, he eats every 3 hours and I time that from the beginning.

  • EBF here. She eats typically every 2-3 hours during the day. Every 3-4 at night on average.

  • I count from the beginning, but my question is often "WHEN WAS THE BEGINNING??"

The last few days, LO has been eating in tiny little spurts, never a full feed. So if I feed her at six first (and she has a little), that's my starting point. But then she'll eat at 6:45 and 7:30. Are those 'new beginning points' or do I still go by the initial 6:00 feed and try and stuff more food into her at 8?

If the feeds are longer than 15/20 min apart I would count the next feed as the beginning of a new feed.

William does this too sometimes, it's kind of like a snack! If he only eats for 3-5 minutes I don't normally count it at all or I will tack a few minutes onto the next feeding. Sometimes he'll eat for 5 minutes, have a burp and a break for 10, eat for 7 more, have a diaper change and then switch to the other side for a few minutes. I'll just count this from the beginning. I'm feeding on demand, so it doesn't really matter to me when he started eating vs when he'll eat again, though I do track it.
  • Thanks ladies! My LO (11 days old) is just at the tail-end of her jaundice, so she is still so sleepy and doesn't recognize when she is hungry. If she does actually show signs she's hungry, I do a happy dance and feed her. Most of the time she gets grouchy because I'm waking her up and essentially force-feeding her! If I can count a good solid feed as a new beginning, it will make both of our lives easier!!
