Bladder Infection-back/groin pain

Hi, I'm new to the board,my name is Natalie :) I am 28 weeks and have horrible right back and right groin pain. I went to the dr and they said it's a bladder infection and gave me one dose of antibiotics and sent me on my way. No fever, no blood, baby is doing great, no contractions. The pain is unbearable in my back and side. I can't walk, move, sleep. Seems really odd to have all that pain just for a uti. Odd bc with utis prior to pregnancy I never had any of these symptoms. They don't think it's a kidney stone or kidney infection. Any thoughts based on your experience? It's been 24 hours and I am just miserable still.

Re: Bladder Infection-back/groin pain

  • It could be a kidney stone that is moving.  Are you vomiting or have nausea? If it was a kidney infection you would have a fever and possibly some blood as well. I've had kidney issues and fever and blood are always the tell tale sign of a kidney infection for me.  Is the pain coming in waves? That's usual for kidney stones.  I would call your doc again and let them know.

  • It depends on how bad the infection is as well. When you are pregnant urine can backwash up into the kidneys and cause an infection in the kidneys. I have been dealing with this issue since week 11. I am told UTI's and kidney infections are treated with the same antibiotics. Mine hurt for a few days after starting the meds however each day the pain got better. Be sure to be drinking a ton of water.

This is absolutely true.  Bladder infections and kidney infections have the same symptoms as well.  The only difference between the 2 is that a kidney infection will 9 times out of 10 present with a fever and possible blood in urine.  The back pain could be from the UTI.  Again call your doc ASAP and let them know what is going on.

  • See I had a fever with my kidney infection but no blood. But I always have blood in my urine if it's a UTI. I kind of think it depends on the person as well.

OP this could be the reason they are saying it isn't a kidney infection.  A UTI will present with blood in urine as well.  If you have a UTI and a fever a dr will tell you it is a kidney infection.  When the infection travels to the kidneys it can get into your blood stream thus causing the fever. How long have you been on the antibiotics?  Could take about 24 hrs to start to work.  Be sure to finish them all.  If it is a kidney infection you are already on the antibiotics.  Be sure to watch out for other symptoms like fever, chills, sore throat.  If the infections gets into your blood it can travel to other parts of you body as well.  I've had kidney infections that have caused my throat to close up and have caused infections in my lungs as well.

  • Hi everyone, so far no fever, blood in urine, contractions or other signs other than the pain in my back and groin  Hopefully that's a good sign.  The antibiotic they gave me is a single dose of monurol, its a powder you dissolve in water.  I'm not trying to feel sorry for myself, but having this pain and not knowing what's causing it for sure is hard to cope with. I am drinking lots of water, cranberry, and lemon juice to help out my kidneys, and heat helps temporarily but this seems like a lot of pain for a uti by itself.
  • Update: so I went into L&D wed per my OB, they found bacteria in urine and treated me with antibiotic, spent all day Thursday in horrible pain. Friday I was 100% myself and no pain, hooray! Come Monday the pain was back, just as unbearable as before, went back to L&D, another UA, it came back clear (good news), no fever no blood no contractions, ultrasound of kidneys was normal so no blockages or inflammation from a stone from what they could detect. CBP also came back clear. Gave me an IV and tylenol 3, which allowed me to walk/sleep through the night without pain. I'm considering a chiroprachter next since they can't explain the pain. This is so frustrating! I've missed 4 days of work and I'm going crazy! I just want to feel better and get back into my routine.
