Things to avoid flat head

My little guy seems to be developing a slightly flat head at 3 weeks. He sleeps in his crib at night and some of the day and naps in his rock n play and bouncy seat and swing as well as in my arms.

He does tend to prefer his right side so I have been trying to move his position a bit. Anything else I can do to help with flat head?

  • Do you have a sling or carrier? I try to hold and wear LO as much as I can during the day to keep him off of his back, hoping that it'll prevent it. And I alternate sides that his head rests on overnight.

  • Have you tried flipping which end his head is on? Every other time you put him down, switch the direction he is. Babies will tend to look towards the door (or at something that catches their eye, like both DS & DD have stared at a red picture in my living room).

  • I second pp, mine favors her left and we realized it's bc there is writing on the inside of her bassinet so she's always facing it. Think she likes the contrast. We flipped her around and now she turns her head. I try to hold her tummy to tummy throughout the day. It's good tummy time for a newborn, and she is starting to lift her head up for minutes at a time already! Uses her arms to push herself up too. So it's a double whammy, avoiding flatness and giving tummy time.

  • Thanks ladies! This is great advice. Yes feeling super lucky that he sleeps in his crib. He seems to sleep better in there than his rock n play for right now.
  • We are terrible parents.  We leave her on her back all the time.  My husband googled flat head and hers looks like the picture.  Oops.

  • I worry about this too! I try to hold her tummy to tummy with me and limit her time in bouncy seats and things like that. It's hard though.

  • My LO is always on his right side. At his 1 month checkup the doctor pointed out that his right side is getting flatter than his left side. We have been trying all the above recommendations to get him to lay on his left a bit more. It is not working!

We just got the same talk at our 2 month appointment.  There was even talk of a baby helmet down the road if needed.  :(  We are now propping her head to the other side with a rolled blanket per our pediatrician's recommendation.  I have also been wearing her more.
