NBR: Food Pantry

Let me first start off by saying I have ZERO issues with people using services as needed...however I found out this morning one of my friends has been going to the food pantry regularly. Again...no qualms if she actually needed help however she lives with her parents works two jobs one is paid under the table has 3 cars (one an antique I know she paid a pretty penny for) and travels frequently and not to mention her dad is manager at a very well known grocery store in our are. If I didn't know her situation I wouldn't be peeved...however I for a fact know she is well off and the fact that she is using services that others truly need is rubbing me the wrong way. Particarly around the holidays...would you say something or just let it go?

  • dkleid...great advice. I too have looked at ppl getting free or subsidized insurance or other "handouts" and been totally pissed about it. My DH and I work very hard, with no help, and live paycheck to paycheck. It's difficult to see other ppl receiving help or freebies or even sympathy, in any situation, when you feel you don't/can't/should not receive the same. I think that is human. However, you just never know what is really going on. This person is your friend so just try to believe there is a reason behind her actions.

  • I'm trying to trust that she really does need it. She was my college roommate so I have seen her bank account and knows what she gets and so forth. You are right PP (not sure how to tag) she could have other stuff going on. I just wish that I knew or she would/have mentioned something if that was the case because we would be the first to help! But I get that she could be "embarassed"

  • I agree with pps re not knowing all the details of her situation.

That said, I know someone who found out his uncle was using the food bank (with no valid reasoning at all) and completely chewed him out. And in chewing out his uncle he made clear that his major issue wasn't that the uncle was using it without a reason - it was that the uncle never approached anyone in the family if he thought he needed help.
  • I wouldn't say anything bc quite frankly it's not your business.

Just because you know what ONCE was her financial situation doesn't mean you know what it is anymore. My family used to make comments all the time about my "spending habbits" when we both were unemployed. What they didn't realize is we were getting help with something from money we were.legt when his grandfather had passed. They just assumed things. It sucks not to know exactly what is going on but it could be a pride issue as well as to why she hasn't come to you and asked for help.

  • I'd probably bring it up but I'm a jerk. I had a roommate once who smoked tons of really expensive weed and took pills he bought on the street then got all of his food at the pantry and that wasn't cute.

I've seen no less than three people at the store paying for their food with food assistance cards while clutching their iPhone 6s. People are assholes.
