June 2015 Moms

Anyone Else...

Getting shit from their loved ones for what they are eating?? I am not high risk, I am not over weight i am measuring a few days a head of schedule. But if I talk to my dad in the mornings and mention that I am stopping to get a bagel he turns to me on the phone and says "Are you sure your allowed to eat a bagel" OR this morning i mentioned drinking a cup of coffee to my mom and she was like Are you sure you are allowed to have coffee?? My sister is constantly giving me nasty looks for having 1 CUP of coffee day (if I even drink the whole thing) and for eating Bacon.  I flipped out on my mom today and was like if someone person tells me what i am and am not allowed to eat and they are not a doctor.  I just cant take people telling me what to eat and what not to eat. They all know i've had pretty bad MS, if it stays in my system i'm going to eat it... just LEAVE ME THE F ALONE.

My husband and I indulged in 'junk food' pre-pregnancy here and there, but now if he catches me 'slipping' he'll say something. It drives me crazy because I follow all of the overly cautious rules, I drink water and herbal tea all day, snack on carrots, grapefruit and cucumber etc, am starting to get back on my light exercise routine; if I want to indulge in kettle cooked chips or an occasional cheeseburger, I sure will and I don't want any grief about it. Carbs are my friend and he keeps suggesting I stop over doing them.

I think we're all doing our best and people should back off. I'm a FTM, and I know it's early in my pregnancy, but it isn't easy all of the time. The judgment we receive doesn't help. I hope your family backs off!

ETA: I love bagels and don't get the bagel thing I started hearing about here yesterday.
  • These people should back off...your carrying a miniature human, not them. My dr went over the nutritional chart for pregnancy with me but she told me that based on what I went through the first 8 weeks, I was in "survival mode" and all will be forgiven. Pregnancy is scary, stressful, hard, and something that is happening within YOU, not them. If they were my family, they would probably have had a bagel whipped at them.

My husband has given me a few side looks at the things I am eating but I told him that I will do my best at eating 90% of the time but if I eat some garbage, as long as the baby is getting the nutrients it needs and I continue to have a normal healthy pregnancy, I am allowed to eat it and it will be up to me to get the weight off after. Your still an adult who can make her own mind up about what to eat. Christ...it's a bagel...not cocaine.

  • I think because my sister has GD (she is 32 weeks) and she has to limit her carbs my parents think that I have it as well. While we go to the same practice we have different OB's and she thinks she knows everything since this is her second pregnancy. We are nothing a like, while we were both over weight growing up almost 9 years ago i did something about it and had Gastric Bypass, she choose not to do something. We are probably 100 pounds different pre-pregnancy. Our diets are going to be 100% different, i worked out 4 days a week (pre-pregnancy, i have no energy yet, but take the dog for a walk every day) she did not. Im just tired of being compared to her and what she is allowed to eat vs what she isnt allowed to eat.

  • My husband is the opposite! On a normal basis he does not like sweets however for some reason he is really into sweets right now and he will bring home things and say "it's for the baby". Lol even though with the nausea I have had I really cannot and do not want sweets! I just think it's funny.
  • At his own peril!

But, yes, a little.  Last pregnancy I craved whole cow's milk, something we never kept in the house.  Every time I bought some DH was all grossed out by it.  Now we have some in the house for our son and I've started drinking some and DH is still grossed out.  He asked me to drink 2% because he doesn't want my cholesterol to increase but I told him to get bent.

  • Haha I just don't tell people what I've been eating. It's a lot worse than one bagel and one cup of coffee!

  • At 14 weeks, I am still at my pre-pg weight. I'm happy if I can eat a whole meal, so if something goes down and stays, I'm gonna eat it. DH has tried a couple times to say something, but the death look he got stopped that pretty quick.

  • I keep telling people I've been eating terrible and the response is always "but you're pregnant, you have an excuse!". Not true, obviously, but people can think whatever they want.

I'm really bad at staying hydrated even on a normal day, so last pregnancy my husband was always on me to drink water. He was doing it in the beginning of this pregnancy too but I think he's given up.

  • I would flip my shit it someone tried to tell me what to eat. The "you need to eat for the baby" comments when I couldn't stomach food pissed me off. Now that I can eat again, I would be ticked if someone tried to tell me what to do. I would tell them that as soon as they want to carry the baby for me, then they can tell me how to eat.
  • I've only had people comment because I'm not eating the things I used to, i.e, bacon, pop, sweets. Nothing like you're described yet, but I see myself wanting to throat punch anyone who thinks they're in charge of my eating habits!!

  • I just told my mom that I'm going to eat what I want and what i know stays down!! Though i do find it funny because for my nephews birthday party i asked what she was serving and she said deli trays and i looked at her and was like were not supposed to be eating deli. I asked if there was going to be anything else and she said that she was getting some tuna fish for her husband because he doesn't eat deli but i wasn't allowed to have it since I do.  I ate 2 tiny slices of corned beef after heating them up and then proceeded to puke my guts out afterwards.  I was so pissed that she wouldn't let me eat some tuna. She got enough for like 5 people and there were 2 there that don't eat meat.  But on a daily basis she has the nerve to tell me that I shouldn't be eating Bacon or drinking coffee...

  • First pregnancy my doc made me cut out all cold-prepared foods (salads, deli meats, veggie and fruit trays) because I got sick, dehydrated, and then hospitalized with early labor at 30 weeks. He didn't want me risking getting food poisoning, etc again. And with an August due date, it was hell.
With this one (my third), my mother (Crossfit coach, eats Paleo pretty consistently) seemed to think that my eating habits would help with MS (like, no grains). LOL. I told her about some research that indicated otherwise, and surprisingly, she was totally supportive of it. But I had to buy my own cup o' noodles ;)
  • I usually tell people: you know, I really love people who have never been pregnant in their life telling me, a pregnant lady, what to do or eat.

    That usually shuts them up.

  • I say to hand them your OB's business card and say " you can call here if you have any questions about my pregnancy." Also works for silly questions about why you haven't given away your cats, whether you should be carrying your own grocery bags, etc.

My sister and i go the same OB practice but she HATES my OB because she apparently made some comments about her weight and how it might affect her with her pregnancy (GD). My OB was right and now she has it and she is tired NON STOP. She cant do something as simple as unload the dishwasher because she is to tired.. Some of it i think is milking it since the grandparents stay with her when they come to town. Other times i just want to yell at her, people are in the wold pregnant with twins, and they do EVERYTHING themselves.. Get up and do it!

First person to side-eye my dinner plate gets stabbed with a fork.

I had a 12" chicken burrito for dinner last night, and guess what? I ate the whole. damn. thing. It was delicious. I have a voracious appetite these days... most of the time I keep it in check, and other times, I let myself just relax and go for it. I was petite to start with, so I expected to gain more weight than some would. Just trying to stay active and keep as much good stuff around the house as I can!

Edited to add: DH has NOT been one to give me the side-eye... he's been very supportive and understanding, for which I am very thankful!

I want Cup o' Noodles so bad now, thanks!
  • The "pregnancy police" are out in full force where I am.  I went to starbucks near the hospital, and a doctor in line next to me said "are you sure you can have that?" when I ordered a small peppermint latte and a doughnut.  I'm blump showing, but not enough for most people to feel confident to say anything.  But he sure felt like he could.

I was like "Yes I'm damn sure I can and will have this".  And gave him my best stink eye.  I would get stabby if family was doing that to me.  DH has learned to keep his commentary on my food choices to himself.

Hang in there.  People seem to have no filter when it comes to pregnant women. And I for one find that obnoxious.

  • Our families like to have their hands in everything all the time as well, they started with my first pregnancy, I was so depressed from it, then they started with interference in parenting, I lost my shit and we moved away. Even moving away the hint only lasted a short time, my daughter will be 2 this month and now they all take credit for her looks and good behavior, I blow up often. Lucky for me this pregnancy I stay away from them and stick close to my loud outspoken very close friends, who very promptly tell our families where they can deposit their opinions, thoughts, and feeling on the matter, making this pregnancy emotionally better. I hope it at least stops with pregnancy for you.
  • We haven't told anyone we're pregnant yet so I've dodged that bullet. I'm sure my mother (oh she of the "why would you let them do a c-section it totally destroys your stomach" and "you shouldnt' have gained so much weight you'll never lose it all" yet had to have lap band surgery in order to lose weight herself...) would have lectured me endlessly by now.
  • I'm a firm believer that eating in pregnancy, especially first tri, is for survival! Eat what you can eat!

  • I would be forced to eat someone if they started on me. :-w

This makes me want to punch things.  REALLY, MOM??  REALLY????
You don't even know the half of it!! Everything for thanksgiving i carve the turkey (I went to culinary school so it comes out the prettiest when I do it.)  When I told them that I wasn't able to do it this year you would of thought i said that someone died from the stares that I got. It wasn't until i said, Ill carve it but unless you want me puking on it I HIGHLY suggest someone else do it.  My sisters mother in law did it instead.

90% of the time my family will ask me to do shit and because im not pregnant with twins like my sister im not that pregnant yet and can do everything and everything... She didnt have any morning sickness, until she is puking her guts out 5 times a day like i was i dont want to hear how i have it much better then her!

Hubby says I trust ya. Other peeps are noisy until I bust out everything I k ow I can and can't have then they back off.
