Sleep time help.

LO is 3w old today and in the last two nights, has completely changed her sleeping habits. Until Sunday, she slept every night in her bassinet and woke up 1-2 times to nurse. Now, she's completely unhappy unless she's laying on my chest or in my arm. And it's not just at night, it's during the day as well. I let her fall asleep after she nurses and then place her in her bed, as usual, but as soon as she's down she panics and fusses/cries until she's with me.

I don't want her in bed with us, but at this point it's about survival. Any ideas or suggestions?

  • My son is the same age and I've been having similar struggles lately. Have you tried a sound machine, pacifier and a swaddle? When he fusses I put the pacifier back in and hold it gently while he sucks and use my pointer finger to rub between his eyebrows down his noise and that helps his eyes close. If he is really fussy I will pick him up in the swaddle and bounce lightly a few times and put him back in his crib. I've noticed that he is hungrier more frequently now at 3 weeks (growth spurt?) so make sure he is fed before placing him back to bed.

DD is 3 weeks too and doing the EXACT same thing..they say it's a three week growth spurt that's causing all of the changes in their routine. It apparently should only last a few days..I'm hanging onto that for now..praying it's over soon.

  • My son did that when he was two weeks old. We found he sleeps best in the rock n play. It was a week of no sleep bc he only wanted to be on my chest. He is 5 weeks (tomorrow) and it is going a bit smoother. Target had the rock n plays on sale when I got mine.
  • M is doing the same thing and is almost three weeks old. Somehow I got her to sleep for 4 hours straight last night (after an hour of screaming), but then she screamed from 5-7:30. I finally gave in and got in the recliner with her on my chest--two hours of blissful sleep! Now I'm back to holding her so she won't cry. I really hope this passes and that it's not colic.

  • My son is doing something similar. Now we swaddle him and let him sleep in his swing or bouncer because they both vibrate which seems to help him relax and sleep better. He still ends up sleeping with me sometimes but something is better than nothing.
  • Mine is 3 weeks and 3 days. She's doing the exact same. I'm thinking growth spurt too. She still acts hungry after we give her 3oz breast milk (bottle feeding using my frozen bc I'm on antibiotics... Actually that's done today so will be slowly integrating the breast back).. Chews her hands and fusses. Pediatrician said she can only hold 3oz at a time though so it's been hell! She likes her graco swing seat on vibrate and she loves her pacifier but it falls out all night and she screams when it does. So I need to find a pacifier that stays in better if those exist I think :( sorry I'm not any help but I'm right there with you.

  • She actually slept some today so I'm hoping for a better night tonight. Up until Sunday, she loved her Bassinest from Halo. I use the sound machine function set on heartbeat and that helps but she HATES being swaddled. I lowered my fenugreek because I thought my milk had finally come in full force but noticed when I pumped earlier that it seems watery. Maybe I'm not getting enough milk to make her little belly happy.

Mine fights sleep like crazy for several hours before bed lately, has been nursing like a machine between screaming fits, won't be anywhere close to content unless I'm holding her while standing & swaying, etc. The only time she'll sleep for more than 15-20 min is on me or against me, and this comes with a struggle. I finally gave in to it again at 2:00 this morning and we both slept until 6:30! She nursed herself back to sleep after a diaper change and didn't wake up again until 11:00.

There is light at the end of the spurt!!!

eta: sometimes my milk looks more like skim at first pump, too, but she's growing like a weed and packing on the ounces. In the morning babies need to replenish their fluids after sleeping for (hopefully) longer stretches, and the evening production is higher in calories and fat to (hopefully) keep 'em content & sleeping for those stretches. I'm not worried... but if you are (mandated disclosure), naturally, ask your doctor.
  • Have you tried swaddling with a blanket fresh out of the dryer? The warmth may help calm your LO. I'm a FTM but from what I've read the fussiness is normal during the 3 wk growth spurt- other moms might be able to shed more light on that though :)
