Live Christmas Tree vs. Artificial

I grew up always having a live tree (is it live after you cut it?). But many people I know prefer the artificial. Which do you prefer/have?

Re: Live Christmas Tree vs. Artificial

  • SS: I prefer the look and smell of a natural tree, but we have an artificial one. When we lived in California, trees were around $80 for a natural one, so we bought an artificial tree that we have used for 5 years now.

  • It's mine and my partners first Christmas together so we decided to get a real one this year. Will probably get an artificial tree for the next ones.
  • Live. I'm allergic but I don't care. I can deal.
  • I used to like live, but I've become old and crotchety and now I won't deal with the mess, the cutting it down, etc. I love having my artificial tree. I'm sure I'll have to get a real one a couple of times as my LOs get older.
  • Artificial because I like being able to put it up whenever I want to without having to schedule a trek out to a tree farm at a time convenient for H.

Artificial all the way, I don't really like the smell of pine, needles everywhere and if I leave an ornament on the tree I don't have to worry about the garbage getting it. It's just there next year. (It's happened a few times) and saves me money in the long run. This tree was free but I'd rather pay $250 one year for a good tree than $50-$150 each year. (One sign I saw... No idea on other places.)

I voted other form since there was no speshul snowflake option for me (how dare you?!!?!!1!1?)

At my dads house growing up we always had an artificial tree

At my moms house growing up we always had a live tree

I personally don't care as long as there is a tree!
Ah man! And here I was thinking I was pro-active in adding the "other form" and "we don't celebrate Christmas". Darn it! I apologize profusely.
    :((
  • Artificial since I was a kid. The live ones kept falling on my sister (seriously that's weird I know) and maybe we should have just bought a better tree stand? Maybe it's just the excuse we were fed so my parents didn't have to clean up the needles and tree mess. Either way, now I'm wondering if I'm missing out on live!
  • Other form? We are currently rocking a small pink feathered tree. I put it up thru valentines cuz I love it!
  • Growing up we always had a real tree.  I had an artificial tree while I lived in my apartment and for a few years in my house.  It was getting pretty worn looking especially after our kitten swung from the branches one year.  We have gotten a real tree the last 4 years now.

  • I prefer a real tree but this year we bought a fake one. It's a good fake so it looks real but I miss the smell. With a toddler who has to touch it whenever she gets a chance it's nice not to have those needles constantly falling

Swoon! Do you remember where you got said feather tree from?!
  • Fake. Have 3 cats. My tree is 12" high and sits on my table bc if i had a full size i bet my 15 pound cat would knock it over. We also live in an apartment for the last 10 years and there is just no room for a large tree!!
  • I love the part of picking out our Christmas tree, setting it up, how are cat loves this Christmas tree (he sleeps with it till it's gone), now seeing our DS get excited on picking out one and the smell. :D

I got it about 6 years ago from Michaels. I haven't seen them recently though
  • I grew up with artificial trees some years and live trees some years. Since I've moved out, I've only had artificial.

My MIL has a pink valentines tree. It's so cute!
  • I refuse to do artificial. I love everything about real Christmas trees!
  • It's got to be live!

  • Live. Definitely. We live in West Michigan and it is $10 for any size u-cut tree only a few minutes from our house!

I'm jealous! We have to travel about 2 hrs I think to get to a u-cut tree. And it wouldn't be $10! I've always wanted to do that though.
  • We've always done artificial since I was a kid, and I love them. I think it's a better investment to spend a good amount on a nice looking fake tree that will last for years, than to spend 70-100 dollars on a real one every year (that's what they're going for here).
  • I'm not a big holiday decorator.  I put the tree up for about 2-2.5 weeks max.  Not wasting money on a live tree every year.

  • Totally late on this post, but just picked up our "live" tree from Home Depot this past Sunday. After giving it a couple good shakes & sweeping up the shed needles, i havnt experienced my usual sniffles. I'm impressed
    Will decorate this weekend~

  • We'll do different every year. I have a few fake ones but this year we did a live. Just depends I guess.

  • Artificial because we put the tree up early and are too lazy to take it down in a timely fashion. I think we took our tree down in May. :/  It would be a fire hazard if we had a real tree.

A separate tree that we had just stayed up all year long.
