E-cigs... Second hand concerns

i currently have a 1 year old and am half way through my pregnancy with my second one.

My SIL's boyfriend recently stopped smoking cigarettes but picked up e-cigs. I prefer my son to not be around him when he uses as all ages are impressionable. Does any one know if the 2nd hand smoke is harmful to me and my son or am I just not-picking? I've heard they are not regulated so when he does smoke around us not only do I worry about his impression on him but also what we could be inhaling when he exhales the vapor or plays with my son after smoking as he likes to get in his face!
Advice needed on e-cigs, if their harmful and how to nicely ask him to stop!

Re: E-cigs... Second hand concerns

  • My H has switched to smoking ecigs after years of smoking. Since he knows a whole lot more about them than I do, I asked for his recommendation. He suggested looking on YouTube. Look up "Rip Tripper ecig side effects." He's (Rip Tripper) pretty good at explaining all things related to ecigs. Hope it helps ease your mind.

  • I have nothing to base this in fact, but I personally wouldn't allow vaping around my child any more than I would allow traditional cigarettes. I don't believe there has been enough studies and it's a foreign substance that my child could inhale. No thanks. Thankfully, after a few rough months, most restaurants/bars that ban smoking here are also banning ecigs indoors.
  • Oh hell no. Vapor or real cigs you aren't going to be near me or my kid period!
  • I wouldn't allow it near my kiddo. I like that the e-cigs don't smell as bad as the regular ones, but that has no bearing on the health dangers.
  • I used to smoke/vape myself. If someone, pregnant or otherwise, asked me not to around them I wouldn't. It was my habit, and if I wanted to smoke I could excuse myself like a grown-up.

I think it depends on the brand he vapes/the apparatus he vapes out of as to how many harmful substances are put out. As PPs mentioned, it takes decades of research to determine how safe something is. I used a nice mod with a tank (I didn't like the drip system), vaping a solution of water or water/gylcerin mix, nicotine, and natural flavorings. (FFMC: There's nothing like a cup of coffee with your morning "smoke" that tastes like Captain Crunch.)

They're advertised as something safe and sometimes even a "healthy" alternative. I'd like to hope there's not an issue since it can be helpful stepping stone down to quitting, but if you're uncomfortable then follow your gut. It's like letting your LO drink soda or having a bedtime routine. This is a parenting decision that needs to be respected. You could try asking him to at the very least leave the room, if not go outside to  vape/smoke. I agree that even very small children are impressionable, and I would be worried as well. Some of the juices have a VERY strong sweet smell/taste, like candy. It not only glamorizes smoking in general, but is encouraging for young children to try/taste/smell even just the blown vapors.

My SO vapes as did I up until about 6 or so weeks into my pregnancy when I actually found out, we actually just went and bought him this new fancy schmancy one tonight as his Christmas present and I mind much less being around the vaping than the cigarettes smoke but that is just me and what I am comfortable with and I am in no way saying that it is safe and generally he doesn't smoke around me other than maybe a few puffs in the car. TBH I was actually pretty concerned when I found out that I was pregnant because I had been smoking up until I found out. I mean regardless of whether something is potentially harmful to the health of yourself or your child if you don't feel comfortable being around it then put your foot down on the situation with others around you or remove yourself and your child from it. Like porn for example is not hazardess to the health of your child but im sure you wouldn't want your child watching it and would take them away from the situation if the person watching it refused to change it. As pps have said. They are generally unregulated and the FDA is just now starting to do research on their effects and what not. I will soon have this problem once LO is born. My mom is a heavy smoker and will also be the main person baby sitting her when I go back to work. As much as I will beg and plead with her to please not smoke around the baby I know that I will have a hell of a fight with this subject. This from the woman who thought I was crazy for quitting smoking when I got pregnant because, and I quote, "i smoked a pack a day when I was pregnant with you and you are fine" bah lol. So basically what I am saying is do what you are comfortable with. Regardless of what anyone says the effects may or may not be if you don't want your children or yourself around it then don't. Good luck, hope all goes well :)

  • I banned them at my business after several customers complained that the smoke clouds triggered asthma attacks in them. Additionally one customer brought me some study showing that the vapor had aluminum particles in it which can be hazardous to pregnant women. Maybe I'm overly cautious, but I stay away from them

  • I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to want to avoid exposing yourself and your children to a substance whose health effects haven't been established. I would simply ask him to please vape outside and not in the presence of your son. I don't think you should have to explain yourself, but if you find that you do, the unknown effects argument should put the conversation to bed.

     Anniversary

  • A guy that I worked with he smoked all his life then he switched to e smokes, and he started coughing up blood. So no I don't trust e smokes.
There will be no one smoking anything around my kids. Smokes cigars, e smokes nothing.
  • Thanks ladies! All of your advice has helped me greatly!
