Constipated 1 yr old - transitioned to whole Milk recently

Hi There!

I was wondering if anyone on this board has had experience with a constipated 1 year old after a transition to whole milk from formula? We transitioned from Breast Milk to Formula at 10 months with no problems, and just recently made the transition to whole milk from formula after her 1 year check up and OK from her Pedi. this last week has been tough on her because she has been getting very constipated. I have been giving her prunes and beans and fruit and that helps some. I think she is drinking less milk than she did formula and not necessarily making up for it by drinking more water, so that may be part of it too. How can I get her to drink more water? Should I try giving her juice? I haven't yet because of the sugar but am wondering if I should. She currently drinks between 16-20 ozs of milk a day and sips water.

Thanks for any advice you mighth have!

  • Have you talked to your pedi about it? How much milk did he advise daily? My pedi usually advises juice to help with constipation.

My DS was the exact opposite and diarrhea after we switched to cows milk. I limit him to 8 oz per day and the rest of the time he drinks water. Offer water all day long.

  • @ashiscute I did email my pedi today, she recommended peaches, pears, prunes and said an oz of juice to 6 ozs of water in a bottle might help. Also said her digestive system just needs to get used to the new milk. I just hate seeing her uncomfortable.
@pavlovcat‌ I'll try the watered down juice tonight and keep up with the P fruits. Thanks!
  • My little guy had the same problem. After trying prunes, more water ect my pedi said to try 2% and it worked like a charm. No more constipation.
  • @aanzelmo1‌ so we ended up doing a couple things that worked... First we water down her midday bottles so they are only 50% milk and 50% water (prob a lot like 2% milk), second I make sure beans are a regular part of her diet ( thank god she likes beans!) and also we continue to give her puréed sweet potatoes by Plum organics regularly which seem to really help. My theory is that eventually her midday bottles will be replaced with pure water, so I'll keep diluting the milk until we get there since right now she isn't big on drinking water. Lastly we learned to avoid or at least cut back on binding foods like bananas, white bread, white pasta etc.
  • I put a splash of apple juice In her water bottle. She also gets mirlax everyday. She's had problems since about 8 months. She drinks soy milk, lots of fruits like pears, apples, watermelon. She also has all bran cereal every morning with lots of fruit. For Her sandwiches we use fibber bread. She has a strict diet. And no bananas. That's the worst for her. :( good luck.
