Gestational diabetes.... Anyone else?

I'm a ftm.

I know they usually test between 24-28 weeks. However when I went for my first ob apt last Thursday at 11w he wanted me to go get tested right then.
So off I went and a few hours later while on my 4 hr drive home I got the call that it was positive. I'm jut glad they caught it early on.

Waiting on a call from the health unit diabetes person (hopefully tomorrow). Then I will
Find out more.

For now I've completely cut out white grain and have been making sure to have small snacks throughout the day.

Anyone else diagnosed with GD?

Looking for meal tips
And just to know I'm not alone.

Re: Gestational diabetes.... Anyone else?

  • Did they have you do the fasting 3 hr test? If you ate before the test it can change the results. That being said the diet isn't horrible and it's a good healthy way to eat. I was diagnosed about 2 weeks ago around 11 weeks and my food numbers are easy to control, my fasting # is up and down but they put me on a low dose med.

  • No I have an apt with my family dr in town on Tuesday I'm guessing he will have all of that booked for me when I get there

Sort of in limbo right now.
  • I'm hypoglycemia.. I fail the 1 hour sometimes... Then the 3 hour it drops so low they give me sugar drink...
  • It was just the hour test. I was at my obgyn apt 4 hrs from home.

Then my local dr office called with results - hoping to get it all worked out on Tuesday at my apt here in town.
  • I have GD! I'm a third timer ;)

Whole grain/wheat pasta, whole wheat bread. Nothing high sugar in the am and protein with meals/snacks will help your numbers. If you have any questions ever, feel free to PM me.

As far as the 1 or 3 hour test goes. Depending on your result, some doctor's will diagnose you after the 1 hour. My dr does this if you're above 200 after the 1 hour...Some make the cut off at 180. Don't worry, hun, it's totally do-able! :)

  • I had GD with my DD and I will surely have it with this baby. My saving grace was sugar free chocolate fudge pudding and Jell-O. I also religiously kept track of my carb counts, which is important to keeping good blood sugar. I also found some good sugar candy (Dove and Werthers) that didn't bum me out around the holidays. When you have GD, it is important to watch portion sizes and to read labels. Breads that are 22 grams of carbs a slice aren't OK. You need the whole grain breads without enriched flour. Finally, and this was key, I tried to do light exercise or some kind of activity (like cleaning) after I ate so that I would burn a little of it off.

  • I have GD. My blood sugar levels were elevated prior to pregnancy, now on insulin to get sugars in check. It's definitely been a struggle especially with all the holiday treats floating around the office and numerous Xmas parties.
  • Thank you all so much for the tips and advice - it's nice to know that I'm not alone.

I'm guessing I will find out what the number was on Tuesday.

I came back to post... And it reposted... My app hates me
  • Still waiting for my doc to call back but I got my results online via patient gateway... After the one hour test my levels were 138. Normal range Is anything 140 or below, so fx I made it by the skin of my teeth. I still wait to hear her take though, since I had it last time around with DD. I'm sure we will be keeping a close eye going forward. Especially since it was so close....

Yup I spoke too soon, just heard back, they use a marker of 130, rather than 140, so I will be going back for the 3 hour test :(
  • @KimberlyandThor I was about to say YAY go have a cupcake for me! ;) Hope you can squeak by the three hour.

@ldg1979 I already have GD, second kid second time. I absolutely cried the first time but you will get used to it quickly. A big perk is you will be very healthy during pregnancy and look fabulous post-pregnancy! You'll get into a rhythm with the eating cycle. My numbers are always better if I include protein, especially in the morning. My favorite indulgence is for my late night snack, a dark chocolate covered ice cream Dove bar. Apples and peanut butter, eggs, cheese, tons of meat in many different ways... you can PM me too if you have questions. I think once more people have GD on this board, there will be more threads about meal and snack ideas.

  • I have it too. They didnt' give me a 1 or 3 hr test. They saw my AIC was 6.8 at my 8 week appt and my DS was almost 10 lbs and I was borderline with him, so they're taking extra precaution. I'm on 2.5mg of glyburide right now for my morning fasting #'s they've been a little high yet. I'm trying to figure out my key for meals, as 3-4 carb choices for supper still seems a bit high for my body.

I've found some excellent stuffed pepper recipes, a fajita chicken bake and a enjoy a variety of omelets for breakfast.

It was really upsetting to me my first few weeks, but now I just want to be the healthiest I can for this little bug.

Let's support each other! We got this! :)

  • Well I can't say I wasn't expecting it. In June, we can all have a cupcake together! And @ldg1979‌ , it's really not so bad once you get into the groove and get over the cravings! It also forced me to exercise on the days I didn't want to, so it helped keep me in shape and a healthy pregnancy weight gain. DD was very healthy and weighed 8lbs 2oz, not so bad. I was able to keep my numbers managed with diet and exercise, until the very last couple of weeks where I just could not get my fasting level right, it was always over by 1-3 pts, so they gave me a very low dose of insulin before bed each night.
