Tuck this away for later re:movement

Hey y'all!

Just got back from an appointment and had a good discussion with my doctor I thought some of you might appreciate.  1st trimester is so difficult, because there's no way of knowing what's going on in there.  I mentioned to my doctor I'm looking forward to movement because it'll be reassuring.  Knowing my anxiety issues, she reminded me that even when you start feeling movement, it will not be every day.  You won't start feeling daily movement until closer to 24 weeks.

I know it's early days for this yet, but I don't know if I'll remember to post this when we're all further along.  So if you're like me and start worrying about whether everyone is A-OK in that uterus of yours, don't freak out if you feel movement and then don't feel it again for a couple days.  I know that has the potential to send me spinning, so if you're likewise, try to keep this in mind!

  • I had an anterior placenta with my last and didn't feel ANY movement until about 22 weeks. It wasn't regular until much, much further along.

  • Yup. I was just thinking this over the weekend, so I went and looked at the weekly check-in I kept with DD.
--First felt movement at 14 weeks. (one lone tiny thump)
--Wasn't even sure it was fetal movement until 16 weeks (as in, it was spaced out several days apart before then).
--Didn't feel her daily until between 19 and 20 weeks.

Very similar to my experience.  First felt movement at 14 weeks but mine was more of the "quickening", felt like a million little butterflies deep in my pelvis.

Didn't feel little tiny thumps daily until 18 weeks.

  • OK probably a dumb question, but @NoeliaV‌ and @khaze‌ - how could you tell it was quickening and not just digestive/intestinal gurgles? I've felt "things" but just chalked it up to my innards. Did you have a moment where you "just knew"?

She kicked/punched the exact spot where the doppler had just been, lol. If it hadn't been for that, I probably would have thought it was some rouge gas bubble.

The ones between then and 16 weeks were then mostly the flutters/wiggles.

Fetal movement is one of the things I actually love about pregnancy. I can hardly wait.

  • @littlechemist - I guess I can't say that I'm 100% sure it was movement that early along.  It was just so different feeling.  You pretty much know what gas feels like and it just wasn't that feeling and it was deep inside my pelvis, right where your uterus is at that time.  I was just laying down watching tv after I had eaten so I always figured I got lucky and baby was waking up for his meal.  Definitely can say for sure I felt daily movement at 18 weeks though.  Can't mistaken those little taps going on inside you.

The space is all filled with my ute and my intestines are up much higher now, if that makes sense? Also, it's more "in front" so even if it were lower digestive on-goings, I'd feel them more "in back" I think.

It took me a bit of time to really be certain that, yes, those were fetal movements. (I felt some flutters and rolls the other day, but shhh! I'm not certain enough to call it yet.)

  • @NoeliaV - definitely my favorite too until they decide to see how far up in your ribs they can stick their appendages!

  • Mine told me the same thing today! Even if baby's moving, don't expect consistent sensation until after 20 weeks.

  • @khaze
lol. My DD always stayed pretty low, so we didn't have the feet in the ribs issue. She did treat me to more than her fair share of 3am dance parties, however :P

  • I barely felt any movement with my last pregnancy because I had an anterior placenta.  I could feel him when I drank something cold or when I was trying to lay down at night.  The first real kicks I felt were two days before he was born.  I think that's when he dropped into place.
  • That's great information. Thank you for sharing @blue-eyedwife!
  • Had an apt on Friday and my doctor said for me not to expect to feel any type of movement until 18 weeks and then yes, it might not be much or every day for a few weeks after that. This is my first so I am anxiously hesitant to feel anything...I think it will probably freak me out at first :)

  • Thanks @blu-eyedwife‌! Can't wait to start feeling those first movements!
  • Thank goodness for the search function! I've been freaking out because yesterday I felt flutters and today nothing. I'm only 15 weeks so it's way too early for daily flutters, but still... Anyway, thanks for this!
