Buying for the nursery

Has anyone started buying items for the nursery? What have you bought? I'm so wanting to get started and have picked up a few decor items here and there but no big items. I'm not due until mid June. Thoughts? When is TOO soon

Re: Buying for the nursery

  • Well, we just build our house this fall and moved in October 1, I picked a color for the babies room in August even though I didn't find out I was pregnant until mid October, because we were trying. I picked a color that will go for a boy or a girl, and I know I am doing gray and white bedding either way. So I could start buying stuff, I just haven't yet between christmas and my DD 3rd bday soon, we will probably wait :) but whenever you want is fine. We bought our stroller/car seat travel system when we were 14 weeks with DD because it was a good deal and the one we wanted. So totally your choice.

  • My husband and I just bought our house in September, but we knew we wanted both of our spare rooms gray. We will be painting the room in February (when I still have the energy to do anything). Also, my husband and I have picked out a theme (moon, sun, and stars).  We will be finding out if LO is a boy or girl, but if we have more kiddos it would work for either gender. I have only purchased 2 signs for the room (One says: You are my sunshine & I can't remember the other right now). We, also, purchased a swing because it was on a buy sale trade website and is the exact one we wanted for a good price.

I don't think there is a time that is TOO soon. It is whatever works best for you and your husband. For example, my husband is going to be gone until March, so we will wait to purchase/put together the crib, etc until after then.
  • We bought a dresser, mainly because we were having my parents stay in the guest room that we're planning to convert and thought it would be better to have that in there for them than the entertainment center that had been there before. It's probably not too soon if you want to start, especially if you know you'll procrastinate and/or have an easier time paying for things over time rather than all at once.

  • I don't think it's too soon to start buying now. I'm due in late June, and DH and I have already bought a car seat (with two snap-in bases), a stroller and a love seat glider. We would have bought a crib already, but the one we want is currently out of stock for the time being. Although, I did see a similar post earlier where a STM posted that it may not be the best idea to buy things here and there along the way because you may end up spending more in the long run, as opposed to saving and then buying all at once. But DH and I did it this way with our wedding because we A. Wanted to take advantage of deals in the moment and B. Didn't want the stress of waiting until the last minute to get everything. One thing I would add is that if you expect that anyone will gift you some items that you're interested in buying, then just wait. We knew no one was going to shell out hundreds for a glider or a crib, so we bought the items while the deals were hot.

  • We have a rocker/glider and travel system that MIL bought us and a bouncer/swing my mom bought, plus some gender neutral onesies and such that we've picked up along the way.  I like taking advantage of deals in the moment, so I wasn't passing up the adorable little Carter's sleep and play in thin cotton with little froggie feet for $5, you know?  And my travel system was $164 from BRU, which I think was a fantastic deal (pretty sure the pattern was discontinued)!

  • I just got my fabric swatches from Pottery Barn for this glider that I've been drooling over (the way I see it, I'm going to spend a significant amount of time in that chair BFing LO when he/she is an infant and in general for reading to LO for a few years so it had better be something that I'm in love with). I'll be buying my chair, art, throw rug (we have hardwood) and light fixture in the next few months and then painting the room before I'm out of my 2nd trimester. Everything else can wait until after my shower (there are a few little groups of family members who really like to go in on larger gifts at showers so I feel comfortable putting our crib and car seat/travel system on the registry).
  • Wow thanks for all of the replies! I will continue to pick things up as I go :)
  • for ds (born 3/2011), we waited until 20w and then started buying things. My showers were on black friday and then in January.

Whatever we didnt have by the end of the 2nd shower, we bought in early feb. We painted his room when we bought our house 2y before he was born- a fave shade of blue.

With this LO, we have very little to acquire. I bought an infant seat on Cyber Monday ($65! I couldnt say no!). We inherited a few other items from a friend. We need a place to stash LO #2's clothes, and some smaller things.

Of course if this LO is a girl, we may have to get some pink clothing. ;)

Oh. and I'm lusting after a Mamaroo, also, so. I may ask for it for my end of May bday.

  • My advice would be to look at things now before you know what you are having. If this is your first and/or you know you will have more pick big things in neutral colors (i.e. pack n play, stroller, carseat, crib) anything you would reuse. Because if you have a girl this time and everything is girly and next time you have a boy you may have difficulty reusing things. I think amazon is awesome for this I made a secret wish list early on and added to it. I like being able to go back 2 months later and see what I truly love and what was something that was just spur of the moment, won't really use/need.

  • Being the nervous Nellie that I am, I'm waiting until Feb on furniture. But I'll start picking up decor, clothes and things that can be put away if necessary. I'll probably get the room prepped as well. We want to put up new trim and new doors. This is my 2nd so no shower for me. If this is your 1st, don't buy too much.

  • We haven't bought anything yet. The room the will be the nursery is currently the "man cave" and it needs a complete over haul!!! Most like will start renovating and buying things in February when it's DH's slow time at work. I probably won't buy glider, swing, car seat etc until after my shower in the Spring. I know that I like to go in on bigger items with people when I am gift buying. If we don't get them no biggie, still will have plenty of time.

  • My mom is buying us the crib and dresser from Pottery Barn for Christmas.  Yay!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • DH talked about getting the office (soon to be nursery) cleared out and start setting it up as a nursery over Christmas since we are telling our families. We haven't 100% decided yet though because when we set the nursery up DD is going to have to transition to a regular bed so we can steal her crib...

I feel like it would be a good idea to do it now because it would be less likely that DD will feel like the baby is moving in and stealing all her stuff but I am also reluctant because I have a weird feeling that starting now is jinxing things.
  • We got a crib and a pack-n-play but that is it so far. They were both really great deals. We are Team Green so we are getting everything gender neutral, which works for us anyways so we can re-use for any future babies. We have been sent some "congrats" gifts such as blankets and towels and bibs from some family members already, which was nice. We live 800 miles from any family so we aren't too confident anyone is going to want to purchase big ticket items for us when they probably won't ever get to see them in person. We also think it will take us the entire 9 months to find the deals and what we want without breaking the bank.

I am a huuuge planner, budgeter, list maker, and general queen of all things organization... So it's really ticking me off that it's considered such a "jinx"... By everyone! I totally get what you're saying, better to start now, right?

I went Christmas shopping and bought my god son a toy. DH comes home, looks at it and- VERY SUSPICIOUSLY- says, ".....what is that.... A little early don't you think?"

I just want to start! Making lists, buying and storing! I don't want to get the side eye from everyone about it being early.

  • Ive bought the crib, swing, bassinet/changing table thing, diaper genie, one outfit. We're having a boy so I just pick up stuff when I see it for cheap.
  • elbowpasta   Yeah I'm def on the fence. I think the jinxing thing is bull but there is still a little voice in the back of my head like "heeeeey now maybe you shouldn't do that". Which is annoying.

Plus I know myself. Our office became our junk storage area after we moved into our house and it's going to take me like, 3 months to clean it out so I should start now.

And like I said I really really don't want DD to feel like the baby is taking anything away from her. She has recently started getting really defensive about her things "that's my blankie don't touch it" and just in the last few days developed a fear of the dark so I'm super nervous about changing her to a new bed and don't want to do it without a nice long transition period before baby arrives.
  • @Schnurette‌ ...it was super hard to tag you because every time I say your SN in my head I say "Schrute-ette." I'm kind of big on The Office, don't know if you've ever watched it.

I'm a FTM, so I don't have any super profound words about your little one, but I feel for you. It's a tough situation, and as a kid who remembers being "put out" by a new baby, it's rough. Really, prepping early seems like a good path for her! I hope the transition goes well for her and for you!

  • I just saw a bunch of baby stuff on a buy, sell, trade FB page and couldn't pass it up! Those will be my first purchases after I pick them up on Friday. It's nearly impossible for me to spend full price dollars (or even to ask firiends and family to) when it see a good sale or deal. Jinxing be damned!
  • I have bought a ton of stuff- the danger of finding out the sex so early lol! On the other hand it is nice that I've been able to take advantage of the holiday sales. I bought the car seat, crib, some clothes, cloth diapers and stroller. This is #3 for me so I knew exactly what I'd need to fill in the gaps of what I had gotten rid of. There's very few things I still need.

The big job will be converting the office to the nursery. So everything will sit in boxes for a few months yet. The only reason I felt comfortable getting the crib this early (and not taking it out of box) is because I got it at kohls and they will take ANYTHING back!

  • I have been too nervous to buy anything either, the only thing I have purchased this entire pregnancy is a picture frame to put an ultrasound picture in (we told my hubby's parents this way). Last night my best friend just bought a personalized "we're expecting" ornament for us so I will put that up on the tree and likely use it for our facebook announcement on Christmas. I am 15 w 2 d, will likely wait until after Feb also to buy nursery items ( Team Green). Does not mean I am not Pinteresting ideas like crazy, lol!
  • Forgot to post this PSA yesterday...Target had the rock n play 30% off, not sure if they still do. They aren't for everyone but it was the only thing my daughter would sleep in.

I think it's fun to start on the nursery ASAP! Plus it gives time for you to watch for deals. I guess to me once you get past 1st tri it's not too soon.

  • I own a children's consignment sale, so I picked up a few things at our holiday sale last week. Double snap n go, extra swing etc. I'll pick up the rest of the big stuff at our spring sale. The twin thing is starting to sink in.

  • I bought a crib and changing table because it was a good deal. I'm a little insecure because I bought it before we knew we were having a boy and I'm afraid it's too girly looking...white with spindles on crib?
  • I don't know what to do.  My DH and I are trying to decide if we want to buy our DS (he will be 22 months when DD arrives) bunk beds and using his nursery furniture for the new baby, or should we buy new nursery furniture for DD.  By the way, our current furniture converts and the new furniture we are looking at converts.  Any suggestions would be helpful.
  • Wait until your shower! I know our families will want to buy most of the big pieces for us as gifts. Just go shopping and open your registry!

I love all these posts and learning all about what you ladies are doing for your sweet babies.  My parents have decided that a crib would be a great Christmas present and we are so happy.  We have brought clothes for the baby when we have the extra $.  As far as other nursery items we are having some given to us, such as a rocking chair that has been in my family for years!!  Otherwise we will buy the rest when we get a chance or have the money.  Since we are team green and I'm not superstitious (well not anymore) we are going ahead and looking for sales and just enjoying all the sweet moments of getting ready for our Lil D!
