Kidney Stones

Has anyone dealt with kidney stones? I apparently have them, although they can't see them on the ultrasound. But I've been told that this is normal especially when you're pregnant. I've been in severe pain for three days now and the only thing they gave me is Percocet which is barely working. I'm supposed to follow up with my doctor at some point this week. I know I can't possibly live like this, and I hate taking these drugs.... but can anybody tell me if they've been through a similar experience and what they've had done or what helps? Thank you

  • So sorry to hear this. I used to work for a urologist and unfortunately it is common during pregnancy. Prayers that the pain gets better soon!

  • Thank you! The pain is worse than labor... Haven't been able to keep food down for two days.
  •     I've had them before and during pregnancy. Last time I had them I passed five over the course of about two weeks. Not my favorite. They gave me percocet, which helped, So I can't help you there, but you might ask your doc if Flomax is safe during pregnancy. I was given this during one episode, and it seemed to really help. It dilates your urethra making it easier to pass the stones. That's what I was told anyway. I'm sorry you are going through this, though. Kidney stones while pregnant is just AWFUL.

  • I have never had them, but just yesterday someone was telling me that they feel like lodged gallstones, and I have had those. That pain is horrendous. I'm sorry you have to go through that.
  • Hope you feel better and get some relief soon!

  • I had kidney stones about 8 years ago.  They were so big that they couldn't even be broken up, so they had to go up and... "retrieve them".

The pain was so severe that I was vomiting in the ER.  My nurse told me that she'd gone through it and also went through med-free childbirth, and that the former was more painful.  For me, I didn't get any relief from the stones until they finally hooked me up to morphine.

Not entirely helpful, but I just wanted to commiserate.  GL and I hope you get some relief soon.

  • Thank you all for caring so much and for the input! I'm glad other ladies know what I'm going through. It's truly horrifying and difficult to convey to people just how bad it is. Unfortunately the hospital I was at showed absolutely no sympathy. I was literally there 5 hours and bounced back and forth between L&D and the ER.

This happened about a month ago when I was out of state, and the hospital I was at was amazing! They sent me right up to L&D, checked on the baby, and had me on a morphine drip in less than an hour. It wasn't until they upped it to 10mlgs of morphine that I had enough relief that I could sleep. I was hoping for the same treatment at the hospital here where I am suppose to deliver my baby... But it was just awful!!! I'm literally dreading the pain coming back knowing that I'll have to deal with only the Percocet.

I have an appointment with my doctor today, and I am going to voice my concerns with her and hopefully get some answers. I just feel like there is no point in taking Percocet if it's not really gonna help... Id rather be in the hospital where they can monitor the baby while I have relief.

I'm drinking a lot of lemon juice, so my HOPES and prayer is that it will help enough that this won't even happen again.
