Method of finding names

What is your method of finding names? We have a big book of 60,000 names which I find completely overwhelming. Then I've used nymbler which I feel like just suggests super trendy names which is not my style at all.

Re: Method of finding names

  • We wanted an Irish name, and started searching the internet.
  • Loading the player...
  • This may sound odd, and only works for girl names, but there is a bridal gown designer I love (Justina Mccaffrey) who names most of her gowns after pretty girl names, so I was looking at her site the other day for inspiration. Otherwise I like the suggestion of 'everyday' things that someone above mentioned... Like tv and movie credits, magazines, etc.

  • All great ideas ladies thanks!
  • For me, it started with figuring out what DH's style was and making a list from there of names I liked.

  • I get a lot of my names from TV and books. Also being a regular on this board has made my name list insanely long - there are so many great names!

  • I bought the book Baby Name Wizard. It has a lot of names but it's not an overwhelming amount like those grocery store check out line name books. And under each name there's a section for brother/sister names that go with the name you chose. I used this, since this is my first baby, as a 'oh you liked this name? Try this one.' It was helpful. We had a girl name picked out but I had no clue on a boy name, and of course that's what we're having.

  • Ditto the cemeteries, family tree, movie credits, and searching for a specific category (ie saints' names or ethnicity.)

  • I picked a website (can't remember which now) and went through literally every name. If I doubted its credibility, I looked it up on Behind the Name. I made a list of all of the names I liked, shared it with DH, and crossed off any that he didn't like. Then we went from there to choose the name.

I agree with movie credits, especially shows that are produced/filmed outside the U.S. I also love namenerds because it shows you the real popularity of a name with all spellings. My son's name is Reed which SS has at like 393 because it's the less common spelling but Namenerds has it like 187 when you add in the other Reid's (and tragically) Read's, Reade's etc. We like less common names, not less commonly spelled names. There are some names that are in SS top 100 but end up being a lot less popular than you think when you add in all the crazy spellings for Jackson, Michaela, Addison, etc.

I love names and honestly I find a lot if names and names to explore doing every day things, reading, people I meet, media, etc. I also love looking into family history for inspiration. I also like to watch film credits and looking at the names. I usually get a few each time that I want to look up or remember as eye catching.
I thought I was the only one. :)

Honestly, a lot of it for us is family names, fortunately I have a huge family. Also, saints' names, and some literature and TV shows (H's favorite pick so far came from the new Upstairs/Downstairs, not to be named after the character, but it's a really pretty name that we'd never thought of before).
