High-Risk Pregnancy

Low progesterone @ 7 wks 1d

I am 32 and am currently pregnant for the third time (first two resulted in healthy babies-now 2 & 4). I wondered if I had a hormonal imbalance prior to getting pregnant this time because of a few different possibly symptoms, but didn't think much of it. I have had very few pregnancy symptoms this time around (had bad nausea with the first two) so I called the doctor this week. They suggested I come in for bloodwork. I got a call yesterday that my hcg was 14,100 which i was told is considered normal but my progesterone level was only 10. I was prescribed an oral progesterone pill and the nurse didn't seem too concerned and I won't go in again until 9 weeks for my first ulyrasound.

After researching, it seems like 10 is pretty low for 7 weeks and I'm starting on the pills pretty late. Has anyone had a situation like this? I'm just trying to gauge the likelihood of miscarriage. So far no spotting and only very light cramping. Would love to hear from anyone with a similar situation. TIA

Re: Low progesterone @ 7 wks 1d

  • With my son, I gave birth early at 34 weeks. Now pregnant with my second my doctor as me on weekly shots of Progesterone, she said studies show that low progesterone may lead to premature birth so that's why she has me on weekly shots to help me stay pregnant longer. I started the shots at 17 weeks. You may want to ask your doctor if weekly shots would be helpful in your case? They hurt the 1st few times but then you get used to them.

    Best of Luck!!!

  • You could be cramping b/c your level is so low.  It may have nothing to do with the overall health and potential of the pregnancy.  I have been on progesterone in oil for this and my previous pregnancy after recurrent early losses.  This pregnancy I have been being weaned slowly starting around 12 weeks.  We've had to go kind of slowly this time.

I would highly recommend you see a reproductive endocrinologist who is accustomed to dealing with management of progesterone supplementation.  Many OB's are not experienced with it and do not take this matter seriously enough.  I would hate to think of you losing the pregnancy b/c your progesterone supplements were not managed properly.  Be sure they are following you levels!
