Low milk supply...Help!!

I am exclusively pumping for my 4 month old. I've recently noticed that my milk supply has started going down and I'm a little stressed out about it. I've been taking fenugreek and blessed thistle for almost a week and I haven't seen any change. Any suggestions?!?

  • Hello internet stranger.  Why would you ask this question on a birth month board and not, perhaps, the breastfeeding board, or do a simple google search for guidance?  Since you've requested us as your personal google, try this.

To be fair, if her baby was born in July, it makes sense she would try a board with babies the same age.

The Kelly Mom website is definitely helpful, so check that out. Have you had a PP period yet? My supply dipped when I had my first one.

Sure, but can we at least get an intro.  This is her very first discussion or post of any kind.  If I'd never been on a board before and was struggling with a decrease in my supply, seems like this wouldn't be the first choice for looking for advice.
  • Sure, an introduction is always appropriate and nice to receive, as are follow-up posts, but she is probably doing what I was doing last month - frantically searching for solutions as to why she may not be producing enough food for her baby - so I feel bad because I know how stressful it is.
  • Like pps have said, staying hydrated can really help. I'd also recommend eating a bowl of oatmeal (not the quick-cooking kind) in the morning for a few days. Make some lactation cookies (just do a google search for a recipe). Get as much rest as you can, and pump every couple hours to stimulate production. And cover the basics, like making sure you're not wearing bras/tops that are too tight. Give your breasts a break from underwire bras or tight sports bras until you're back up to speed. Good luck! Sending lots of good vibes your way. :)

  • I've had a couple of yeast infections lately and both times my supply dropped. That's one I personally didn't find on google. And my yeast infection symptoms weren't obvious to me so the decrease in milk helped me figure out something was wrong. Just in case this helps you
  • I'm so sorry that I didn't post in the "right board" I was wanting to ask moms that had the same age child as I did because when looking things up you get answers for all ages. So I knew I wanted to hear from mothers who had a 4 month old to see if they were having the same problem and how they fixed it.
Thank you to those who posted some great suggestions! I'll give them a try. Also I think it might be my first pp period because I've been feeling a little off and crampy! Thanks again ladies!!

Wow. What a pretentious bitch you are.  If you didn't have anything nice to say then why even leave a comment?

I'm EP-ing too, what's your diet like? When I went strict low carb, my supply tanked. I went from pumping 26-32oz a day to 18-20oz a day.

Any changes in your diet lately?

Try lactation cookies or lactation shakes.

Going back to work, starting your period, and even stress can diminish your supply.  Mine's gone as high as 35 oz/day and as low as 15 oz/day.  Make sure you're eating enough as well.  Lots of proteins and healthy fats and carbs!

Name calling is against the TOU that you agreed to when you signed up. @Lori_n_Lior‌

  • Couple ideas:

Check the membranes on your pump. I replace mine about once a month, but if you're an EP, you might need to do it more frequently.

Consider the time of the month - my supply takes a dip between when I ovulate and when I get my period. I've heard that taking calcium/magnesium can help, although I've not personally tried it.

Try for a second let down - once your milk stops flowing, switch back to the letdown phase on your pump. I can usually get a second let down and add a few oz. that way.

I'm sure the manual says this (if I knew where it was...), but is 1x/month the recommended time frame for replacing those? I just realized I've never replaced mine after reading your comment.

Sometimes when you clean up shit you have to get a little dirty.

Maybe you can take a page out of @salsera29 's book and tattle.
  • Tattle? There's a word I've not seen in awhile.

God, I'm hoping she comes back with a "neener neener" or calls someone a "butthead".

P.S. I'm proud that butthead was in my Swype list.
  • Wait, what about @salsera29 tattling?  I've missed something.

  • @alohababy14 - I'm not actually sure how frequently they say to replace them, I just know they are cheap and I notice a big difference when I put in new ones, so I do it frequently. With DS, I didn't know to replace them and had the same ones for like 6 months - no bueno.

    ETA because spelling matters

Yes I did, and I'd do it again. Apparently I need that "Board Police" badge back.

The funny thing is, I actually agreed with her. But you can't just call someone a bitch. Be creative FFS.

  • @mamalacy21 - I'm so glad that helped! It really is crazy how much it impacts the effectiveness of the pump. Another thing that also helps me sometimes is massage. There is some info on this page about it that is helpful:

  • I make homemade cookies once in a while if I am not getting as much as I need.  I just get the Betty Crocker mix, make them as instructed, and then add in 1/4-1/3 cup of nutritional yeast (aka brewers yeast).  Not the most healthy option but works once in a while for a boost.
