Cloth Diapering

Facebook Co-op Question

Hi -

I'm expecting my first in March, and am moderately active in my birth month, but am brand new to this forum, so I apologize in advance if I'm asking a question that's been beaten to death, but I'm hoping that since search didn't seem to bring up anything recent, it hasn't.

I'm planning on trying both cloth and disposables early on - keeping an open mind.  It was suggested that I look into Facebook co-ops, but to be cautious.  Anyways, I've identified a couple I'm considering making a purchase through, and was wondering if anyone here had experience with either of them.  The co-ops are:

  • Bazinga Buys
  • Newborn Cloth Diaper Co-op

Thanks in advance for any advice

  • Disclaimer: I am a stick in the mud. I don't do coops. I think they hurt the cloth diaper industry, and I like he cloth diaper industry vibrant and successful. If I needed to cd super cheap I'd use prefolds/flats/flour sack towels and covers.

That being said you do what you gotta do and your values aren't the same as mine and that's totally cool.

  • @Rrrrrachel‌ care to elaborate? I haven't put much thought into the business model, and I am getting prefolds and covers from more traditional sources.

  • I've heard of both those co-ops. I just don't do them since they seem to only sell chinese cheapies, and we only do US made. Most chinese cheapies (Alva, Sunbaby, THX, ect) are not compliant with safety standards and are not supposed to be imported, but obviously fly under the radar. I have used Sunbabies before though, since they were bought for me, and with my second I wanted to support american companies and not outsourced ones. You pay more, but I've found you get a better product.

  • Just the fact that they undercut other suppliers by using wholesale prices and are often for diapers that don't have to meet the same safety criteria or working conditions standards. Off the top of my head.

  • I was in a coop to check it out but didn't buy anything since I didn't like anything in the buys being run. I do know they had one of their orders get caught in customs and I remember reading about the potential for having to pay extra to receive it, but I either left the coop before it was resolved or I didn't notice the resolution since I didn't have anything in that order. To me, the thing that keeps the China Cheapies coming in (other than the price) is the prints, especially since the Chinese aren't concerned about following US copyright laws. I bought a few from one of the bst groups but am selling them after about 6 months since I don't think they have the quality to hold up long term and besides I like my flats and covers and BBs too much.

  • I'm sure not all coops are the same or equally problematic.

  • Personally I don't think Co ops are even cheaper, in Canada though. I find by the time you add the fees it's the same price or more than the store itself. Might as well support the store.

I don't do Co ops either. The one in my area does a lot of Chinese retailers and they have had nothing but trouble getting the proper paperwork. They found out their ergo like carriers were.not certified ... well duh.

If you really want inexpensive options as PP said prefolds/flats are the way to go withcovers. You can buy these used easily if you're still looking to be budget conscious.

I agree that coops are not really cheaper, but sometimes you can find things on them that are just unavailable at US stores.  MK mentioned Glowbugs and I have some Happy Flutes and THX diapers that I really like.  If you're looking to try out some Alvas or Kawaiis without committing to a co-op, Superstash.com is a great website.
