15 year break

Wondering if there are any STM out there in a similar position to mine? It has been 15 years since my son was born. This is my second baby, so do all the STM rules apply? Or, can anyone relate to the nervousness of starting over again?

  • I'll have a 5 year difference and I'm freaking out. More because I'm used to a more independent-ish child - especially weekend mornings when I'm lazy and send him down for bananas before I'm ready to make breakfast :) I also think with 15 and 8 years another shower is justified!!!

  • I can relate, and I think the nervousness is totally understandable.  I found out I was pg with DS 13 years ago tomorrow.  So they will be 12y10m apart.

How's your older child dealing with this?  It's still pretty abstract for my DS.  I don't think it's real to him yet.

  • Hi, STM here.  I will have close to a five year gap.  Also nervous about starting over again.

I really thought I was one and done.  I'm also AMA (granny mom here!!) so I have all kinds of issues.  I'm sure I will be fine but I do have images of me chasing around my toddler with grey hair and a walker.  :)
  • I'm a FTM but come from the perspective where my mom literally had kids in each decade (70's, 80's and 90's) my older sister and I are 13 years apart and my younger sister and I are 8 years apart. I loved it growing up because I always took the perspective that we were all only children at some point. I definitely understand the nervousness but am sure that you're going to be great and it will come naturally the second time around, a lot like riding a bicycle. Good luck and best wishes!

  • @maplebaby‌ My son is excited at the prospect of having a little brother. Don't think he feels the same about a little sister. When he was younger he wanted a little brother - actually, he wanted a twin.
  • @caseycruz02‌ Haha! That's funny. I think mine will come around. When I told him not til June he said "Mom, that's like the end of 7th grade. It's not even Christmas yet! That is like forever away!"

  • My sister is 17 years older than me and my brother is 15 years older than me, so my mom started over with me (and my dad, her second H).  It was a little weird growing up - my sister had her first kid when I was 7 and I had to ask my first grade teacher how to spell "niece" - but it is what it is, you know?  Best wishes for a smooth transition!

  • This evening we spoke to DS about having a sibling. He said he only wants an older brother...and I believe him...he would love an older brother :) I'm truly grateful that my kids will be 5 years apart - mostly because with DS in full day school, I can give the infant the time he/she deserves and then not feel guilty when DS1 comes home and I put the baby in a swing to give him attention. I'm sad that they won't play with each other until they are older - but, I'm hopeful they will have a great relationship because competition for attention will be limited (at least at times) -- a second baby would have also probably pushed DH and I to divorce a few years ago -- so, we are bringing this one into a stronger marriage and that makes me hopeful, too. If only I can get him to stop offering cotton candy at 9pm things would be perfect! :)
  • I have just read your post and thought ...."good im not the only one".
This baby is number 2 and due 3 days before my ds 13th birthday!
I am mostly excited but there is definately that little part of me thinking what the hell!!
Good luck and a happy and healthy 9 months to the rest of you ladiesxx

  • I will have just about a ten year gap. I'm excited and scared, once in a while I think "oh no! Square one! Ten years later!" But I know it will all turn out just wonderful, bumps in the road and all. @JimBobCooter‌ I totally get what you are saying! I don't know if it's because I'm ten years older this time around, but this pregancy has kicked my ass so far and I couldn't have made it this far with a toddler.
  • My first 2 are 3 years apart and my second and third will be 18 months apart. I am home now two days a week with both kids and am so tired about half the time. The other time it's great. I do look forward to them being so close thought and by the time #3 arrives #1 will be in school full time.
