Breaking tailbone during delivery - Q for STM+

Did any of you break your tailbone during delivery? How long did it take to heal/before you could function normally again?

My tailbone was previously broken (no idea when) and now points directly inward at a 90-deg angle. It's such a PITA ( hah)- I already had to sit on a special cushion before pregnancy, so the pain now is super fun! Anyway, I know things can flex/slide with birth but my midwife is pretty sure the bone will have to break. This (so far) is the only thing in dreading about the birth/recovery -- anyone have an experience to share? I've only seen 1 patient with it & she was miserable :-/

  • I'm a FTM but my friend broke hers during both deliveries. I'll ask her about the recovery.

  • I broke my tailbone before I had DS, and it didn't re-break. He was huuuuuge too. I've heard this, and it freaked me out, but I was fine with both of my deliveries.

Oh thank goodness. FX I have a similar story!! Was yours in a funky position after it healed?
  • Ouch!! Sorry you ladies are going through that. I didn't even realize this could be a thing. Is it because you've broken it before or can they just break because of labor (having never had problems before). I hope you manage to get through without it having to re-break.

  • I have wondered this too, as my tailbone juts in at quite an angle... Not sure if I broke it at some point, but I can definitely think of a few times I may have. @mangomimosa‌ I might be feeling your pain, literally. But if we broke it before and can't even place when, maybe it won't be so bad?

  • I didn't not break my tail bone either time. I don't know anyone who broke it either

Boo, I'm sorry you've got the same thing! Makes sense if we didn't remember the 1st time, it might not be so bad -- but I figure it was when I was a kid & didn't have as much body weight (or the requirement to sit & breastfeed...) Well, I guess there's no telling what'll happen. Here's to hoping we don't end up on a donut for months!
  • I was told that it can be removed surgically. Mine has been bothering me awfully this pregnancy. If it continues and hurts during delivery I might look into having it removed. We're planning on at least a few more babies & this is my only real complaint.
  • I broke mine when I was super young it also healed at a bad angle or potentially never fully healed. I have to move around a lot and can't sit in the same position for too long or it gets to aching. I was hoping to rebreak during delivery in hopes of getting a better angle after healing. Mine did not break and did not have any problems with it during delivery.

This is one thing my midwife said - if it re-breaks maybe it will heal in a better position. I just really hope it either doesn't happen, or I'm not terribly uncomfortable with it for too long. ;-/
  • Ouch!!!  That doesn't sound fun.  Maybe you can talk to your midwife about alternative pushing positions that will help avoid the tailbone.  I keep thinking of that Britney Spears statue of her birthing her son on her hands and knees.  I've seen women even push just standing up in birthing videos.  Having been at the pushing stage once before I have no idea how anyone stands during that phase, but it can be done!

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

Great idea! And more incentive to avoid epidural. Squatting will probably be the best... man I hope I can hold out. Please be 7lb, baby!
