Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

17 months and on baby food

I guess I'm just slow but do any of you still feed your toddlers baby food? Don't get me wrong, I like to cook and have him try new things and he has a great appetite but I use them as a safety when there isn't anything else. He has an egg allergy which rules out a lot of breakfast items, batters, some food out, etc. for breakfast he loves cereal (baby or Cheerios) and fruit. I use baby food fruit for breakfast but do regular fruit for lunch or dinner. I use the gerber meals for lunch or dinner when I don't have something cooked, am going out and can't find something safe for him (or to hold him over until some food comes) or when he goes to grandmas. She watches him while I work, she too will feed him regular food if she has but falls back on the jars. Does this sound normal or do I need to stop this cold turkey?

  • These are some great suggestions, thanks! I've done eggless pancakes and waffles..he takes a bite or two but prefers his cereal. He feeds himself with the spoon so it's not a matter of teaching him to feed himself..its me trying to find lunch and dinner ideas in a pinch. Usually his snacks are cheese or yogurt. It's the me running late from work and he can't have the ravilois or whatever quick thing I put together and just using the baby food.
  • DS2 was off of baby food before he turned 1...we used very little of it with him because he loved the food we were eating.  I still use applesauce pouches as a snack.

The majority of time, DS2's lunches include cut up cheese, crackers, sliced deli meat, a veggie and a fruit.  Nothing elaborate and usually stuff I can throw together in 5 minutes.  If I give him a veggie (he can handle them raw no problems but I used to steam them til they were a bit soft but still fairly firm) and a little sauce of some kind to dip it in, he will go to town on the veggies and usually dip everything else in there, too.  He has loved peas from the first time he tried them and will eat them hot or cold so I steam a bag at the beginning of the week and keep those on hand.

If you can find egg free noodles, both of my kids love noodles with a bit of butter and cheese.  Also, you could try spaghetti squash and make that into noodles for a quick pasta go-to.  My boys like the chicken tenders that I make but it's the Bisquick recipe and there is an egg wash...you could leave the egg wash off and try the chicken tenders.  They reheat well and that would be another quick thing to have on hand.  I think the key may be prepping some stuff ahead of time to keep in the fridge that can be reheated in a pinch.

  • I think it's a stereotype that breakfast has to be pancakes or anything of that sort. Japanese eat soup for breakfast, for example. I am sure you will find lots of yummy egg-less alternatives!
  • My 20 months old is way behind the curve with self-feeding and feeding in general, seems to have some issues.  We still give him a jar of baby food 2-3 times per week.  It is specifically stage 3 pureed veggies, and I give it to him because I do not think he gets enough veggies in his diet otherwise, over a typical week.

Do most parents give their toddler's vitamins at this age?  I never have.

I started giving my DS a vitamin around 18 mos per the suggestion of our GI doctor.  DS does not do well with cows milk and I don't give him much so the vitamin is for extra vitamin D.  I give him 2 gummy vitamins each week.  I don't think it's generally advised though.  For food I give my kids what I eat.  Sometimes that's not enough vegetables.
  • DS eats regular food most of the time. However he is 15 months and he still gets pureed baby food a few times a week. Sometimes he eats regular food just fine and other times (especially when he doesn't feel good or is overly tired) he will only eat baby food. I figure it is better for him to eat that than to not really eat at all. Also there are times that is the only way I can get him to eat something other than a hot dog, chicken nugget or cheese quesadilla. I will usually offer him regular food first though and if he won't eat it I then go to the baby food as a last option. Sometimes you just do what you have to do!

Why no raviolis?  Does he have teeth yet?  By about 15 months, our son was eating whatever we were eating, and now he's got a really diverse palette (thai, indian, sushi, you name it).  He has days where he's fussy about food, but generally eats really well.  He was off baby food by probably 9 months old because he wanted what we were having instead.  Is your son showing interest in "big people" food?
  • Most ravilois have eggs so that's out. Also mayo does which is what I'd use for tuna salad. He's interested in big people food but every now and then turns it down. I've been going steady without baby food, made a chicken pot pie, meatballs, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, etc. and today all he wanted for dinner was jar baby food. No meatloaf, no peanut butter, etc. we are getting there... Just slow I guess.
  • Well my 21 month old still gets pureed meat/veggie combo at night for dinner most nights.  Trust me, I've tried to give him regular food but for dinner it is hit and miss.  He will take a couple bites and throw the rest on the ground or feed our dogs.  My pediatrician is not concerned one bit.  For lunch he gets yogurt and applesauce which I guess is technically pureed, but he likes it and eat it all.  We have tried tough love, but it leads to him not eating much at all for days.  We will get there eventually.  I say don't stress if your baby is eating purees.

  • I've got to disagree with the "puree is ok" school of thought.  Our son had FTT due to massive adenoids that prevented him from chewing/swallowing properly.  Our occupational therapist and nutritionist both really stressed how important it is for toddlers to develop rotary chewing skills to strengthen their mouth muscles and jaws for speech development.  Here's a good article on the appropriate age to add more adult foods to your LO's meals.
