What's on your "to do" lists? My OB asked me who my pediatrician was at my 24 week appointment yesterday and since I hadn't even started thinking about that yet I'm a little worried about what else I don't even know I'm missing.
The big things on my list are the breast pump (waiting on paperwork from my insurance company) and ordering the nursery furniture (I'm waiting til after Christmas for this- I think my mother is buying some stuff). I just found a bag that I like on etsy & I'll order that tomorrow I think.
We have a crazy long list of stuff we want to do around the house before the baby gets here- but it's not exactly baby related.
I just got a pediatrician this week, I'm feeling pretty good about that.
Right now I'm consumed with just getting the dammed nursery painted and floored. I know there's a lot more to do, but this is what's consuming me with stress.
I know I need to... Register with the pediatrician I want
Write my birth plan
Notify my job when I want my baby to start their infant program even though I probably can't afford it
Pre-register with the hospital
Start doing my hypnobabies home study course
Get all the baby stuff out of my car and into the nursery - once the nursery is painted and floored
Get a breast pump
Figure out our co-sleeper situation, since DH insists he'll build something but probably won't which means I'll have to buy a bassinet or something.
And probably a billion other things I'm not thinking of.
Well I feel highly unprepared now just reading these few responses. lol I've just been trying to get stuff organized around the house and in the nursery.
I feel the same way!
I still have to do a lot around the house to get the nursery and other baby areas ready.
Finding a Pediatrician has moved up the list.
Sign up for breastfeeding and baby care classes. We signed up for the birth class yesterday.
"Interview" with the natural birth center to make sure I'm a candidate and see what else I have to do to deliver there.
Book newborn/first year photographer.
Buy shower hostess gifts and thank you notes for baby gifts.
I need to contact my new insurance about a breast pump. That's pretty much all that's on my to do list. I'm going to just pack a bag after I go into labor because I'll need the things I want to bring up until then so I can't really just pack things away. But I definitely want that breast pump right away! Last time my milk came in when DS was asleep and he wouldn't wake up and it huuuuuurt! The pump was a lovely relief.

@Carmar3 Yeah, I've favorited this thread because I seem to lack the ability to prepare even close to thoroughly. Same with the what-to-pack thread. Keep making lists for me, ladies. Your expertise? I use it.

I knew I shouldnt have opened this. I thought I was ahead of the game and now its like none of that matters,ha. *favorites thread*
I need to finish the 'kids room' as they will be sharing. This means finish painting dreaded trim...and organize it to my liking.
Take stock of everything I have. Plan to do after Christmas (bottles, etc. get car seat out of attic, et all). Wash clothing I was given and take stock. Buy what we'll need for first few months.
Call insurance for pump.
I am very familiar with our hospital and already have a pedi. Will pack a bag in a month or so.
Plan was to have all ready around 32 weeks (that's when I went into the hospital with DH so a mental thing)...but big stuff will start happening after the holidays!!
Yeah, I definitely feel like I'm in a holding pattern until after the holidays. And my shower is Jan. 4 so that my grandma can attend while she's in town for the holidays. So I will have to take stock after the shower as well and see what we still need. A lot also hinges on how big of a Christmas bonus DH's company gives them this year, and we find that out at the holiday party next weekend.
Holidays are a stressful time to hit the third trimester. I feel more overwhelmed than I might if it were a different time of year.

I feel the same way...there is so much else going on this time of year that I feel completely crazy!
I still need to find a pediatrician, attend childbirth classes, wash clothes, prep cloth diapers, tour the hospital, pre-register at the hospital, pack a hospital bag, figure out a breast pump with my insurance, and buy some smaller things + a mattress for our cradle. We have most of everything that we need already and DH is working on getting the house together. Luckily that just means making room for everything since we are co-sleeping.
Some days I feel super ahead but lately I've just felt completely overwhelmed and not prepared at all!
My H painted the nursery and we are having new carpet installed on the 17th. I pre-registered with the hospital and H and I are taking the tour on the 20th. I also bought a going home outfit for the baby after reading the thread about the Go Bag.
If the baby knocked on the door today the only other thing I could offer would be a dog blanket and a boob. I'm clearly very prepared. :-??
Holy smoke batman! This just made me realize that it's less than 3 months until my due date!! I'm already in the third trimester? WTF? *reality check time*
Just made this list thanks to this thread. You ladies are amazing for helping with keeping me sane and (somewhat) organized and prepared.
-Pack a hospital bag (see list) -buy going home outfit/picture outfit -find pediatrician -come up with birth plan -discuss birth plan with Dr and hospital -Tour Doha Clinic/register? -Sign up with Charlene/doula -Find lactation consultant -baby classes at Doha clinic -baby CPR (Amy arranging) -book newborn photographer ---figure out remaining items to order from USA and ship baby shipment (early January) -prepare nursery -make sure insurance is in line -install car seat bases in both cars (get checked they were done right) -wash all baby clothes/diapers/bottles --- Set up xbox- buy games- destress!
Omg this list is a brilliant idea and I'm pilfering all these & favoriting this trove. Lol & ditto @ST3WD! I need to do most of what you all said.
*paint/furnish nursery *write birth plan *schedule the 3 birth classes through my midwife practice *figure out what I'll wash all the baby's new bedding in *update our will *visit a local CD shop to get a lesson in wtf we want *finish a couple more birth books *glucose test *figure out whether I want a pediatrician or use our awesome family med doc
I feel fairly overwhelmed when it comes to all of this. We will be moving into a new home about 3 months after baby comes so we are trying to avoid buying any big things (such as furniture) and plan to use a bassinet until we move (fingers crossed that the transition from bassinet to crib will be okay). I'm still working on cleaning this house so it can be ready to be sold.
I keep telling myself that there is time...
It hit me about a week ago that I needed to get in gear! I insisted we get the nursery glider chair this weekend because I figured it would take 6-8 weeks to come in. We picked one out and went to order it...and the lady told us it would take 12 weeks! I am due in 13...
She ended up selling us the one on the floor which was the same model and fabric we wanted and they had just got it in so it was in perfect condition.
Just something to think about for anyone else still needing to purchase any furniture!
Now I am making a list based on everything else I just read! Thanks ladies!
If it makes you guys all feel better we have done exactly nothing for this baby. We happen to have a car seat, stroller, and PNP because we got them on Amazon lighting deals a couple weeks ago.
That's it though. That's all we've done. I don't have a crib or dresser, I don't have even one article of baby clothing, I haven't started to build a cloth diaper stash, I have DEFINITELY not packed a hospital bag, I have not called my insurance for a breast pump (and I plan to do to the completely unethical thing and get one before the end of the year because we're switching insurance companies the first of the year and I plan to get a pump from them too)...
I do have a pediatrician though! But I also have a 10 year old and an 8 year old, so I've had a pediatrician for 10 years.
Ugh. Reading your posts reminds me I also have to get my car clean enough to install the car seat in - which I can't do until after the nursery is done because the car is full of baby gear. And write a will for DH and myself. We just got life insurance policies this month, so that's good. Need a going home outfit too, but I'm waiting to see if we get something that will work at the shower. If not I have lots of hand-me-downs I still need to go through.
Being a parent is hard and full of responsibility, and I'm not even a parent yet.
Meh I feel no sense of urgency to get anything done lol
-I already know who I want our pedi to be I guess I just have to call them or something
-My insurance situation with changing my name NEEDS to get straightened out but my stepdad is a moron and he's the only one who can get it done, which has been stressful
-I'll pack my bag like the end of next month or something
-Buy whatever doesn't get bought for our baby shower
Honestly though if I was full term today and he came it wouldn't be a huge deal. Besides my insurance might be billed wrong cause of my name.
Im clearly taking a very laid back approach to this hah

Oh yeah, wills and life insurance!
We also want to become official members of our church so we can have a baptism there.

This is pretty much how I feel. I still don't have a crib or a pedi for DS and he's almost 17 months. He slept in a PNP until 11 months and then a floor bed and sees whoever is available when I call to make an appointment at the clinic (that's how they do it here). So basically this is the same approach I took last time and thus far it's worked out! I'm just happy my insurance change over went smoothly and I can move past that.

I am getting panicky reading this thread. I have the nursery furniture, some clothes, about 150 disposable diapers, and decorations for the nursery. The problem is they are all still in shipping boxes and shopping bags inside of the room designated as the nursery. Stroller, breast pump, car seat and all of the other baby incidentals I totally have no clue. I get so overwhelmed every time I look at strollers and car seats.
@salmphil my favorite thing to wash babies things in is warm water and instead of soap (can be irritating) we use white vinegar. Sounds gross but after the rinse you don't smell anything. Plus it does pretty well at getting the stains out, for stubborn ones I use a Phels Naptha bar (old school stuff) found in the laundry/cleaning isle at the store.
Cool, thanks, @Carmar3! *finally checks something off the list*
We have a lot checked off already: registry, nursery is practically complete, did hospital and pediatrician's office tour, toured our top 2 childcare center choices, registered for classes.
Left to do would be take classes (birthing, breastfeeding, CPR), buy remaining registry items after Jan 10 shower, pack hospital bag, secure childcare to start in Aug, get breastpump through insurance after I switch to DH's plan in Jan (but now I wonder if I should try to get one with my current and then have the option for another next year, didn't think of that!), write up a short birth plan...I'm sure there will be more to add to this list.
* Find Pedi * Sign up for a few classes (SO and my work schedules make it impossible to take any together) * Hospital Tour * Finish Registries * Possibly do nursery (were remodeling and baby will be in our room for a while so this might not get done till post baby) * Figure out hospital bag * Call ins for breast pump (has been on my to do list on our white board for over a month now) * Reschedule WIC apt (cuz i over slept and missed my last one) * Finish buying baby stuff after baby shower which literally could be anything and then put remaining baby stuff together (currently we only have a PNP) * Get car seats installed and safety inspected (mom is getting these for baby shower at end of Jan) * Book Maternity Photos (besides HDBD i have not taken any pictures and we really want something special to remember this by)
Bahhhh I'm sure there is plenty more. But i did pre register at the hospital today cuz i found i was able to do that online so check for that. Ugh
March 15' January Siggy Callenge: Animals Being Jerks
Yeah I guess I'm one of those low key moms. This is number 2 and we haven't done anything. My plan is to get through the holidays and then I will get what I need to. No rush.
I have hardly bought anything because 1) we might move, and 2) we registered so maybe people will buy some things... (I know that's not a popular plan on the bump). 3) we're starting to get some unexpected handmedowns like clothes, bouncer, maybe stroller and carrier.
I have a spreadsheet and a baby list registry and if we get near go time I can just get out the debit card and order everything all at once.
I've done lot of the to dos like tour, hired doula, started classes, filled out preregistration, ordered breast pump, started making quilt, crocheted booties, etc.
We will be using a travel bassinet for the first few months and then likely moving so nursery furniture doesn't need to be ordered yet.
To Dos:
Clear out half of dresser for babies clothes
wash and organize hand me down clothes
buy some newborn cloth diapers and prep them
some craft projects (finish quilt, make mobile and order prints)
life insurance?
schedule meeting with the pediatrician (almost sure who we'll go with)
Sign up for infant care and breastfeeding classes through the hospital
Pack hospital bag in January
Schedule dog training session
Clear out space in closets and storage drawers and get rid of some big things and donations.
Figure out how long I can keep doing my job and let them know if I have to stop soon.
I might get a glider and if so it might need to be ordered ahead.
We haven't done much, and don't plan to do much. At some point in February, we will do the few things on my list, but no reason to do them sooner.
Put the infant inserts back in the carseat and install
Take out the newborn diapers and clothes
Get out my hand pump and some freezer bags in case of engorgement
Set up the second monitor camera
Contact my placenta encapsulationist and book
Put together a small bag of supplies for birth center (pads, tucks, ice packs, a baby outfit and a few diapers)
I also want to get to the dentist before March... but I've been having a hard time getting an appointment, so that might not happen. I feel pretty good about it all, there just isn't much to do with a second baby, it seems.
This thread is stress/anxiety inducing even for a STM like me. I started furiously writing out my list but then realized how I handled the first one and have revised it-
-In the next couple weeks I am going to get my sisters handmedowns and wash those and organize nb & 3m clothing that I already have. This will take me a morning/afternoon at most.
-Around a month prior, I will wash & assemble the bassinet and carseat.
-Around the same time I will pack my hospital bag and buy some nb diapers.
-At some point I will book my photog and buy a nb outfit (ok I just did bc I knew what I wanted. this thread inspired it)
I live in a metropolitan city with everything nearby and family who could grab last minute items if I needed. Not to mention free 24hr shipping from diapers dot com to my house so I feel fine even in that scenario. The hospital also gave me enough of everything for several days so its not like I would go home and not have diapers.
I totally understand bEing a FTM or just naturally a planner so theres nothing wrong with getting everything done early but I dont want this thread to make all new moms freak out.
PSA: if you're doing legal stuff to set up a will already, it'd be a great idea to do medical power of attorney at the same time for you and your SO. It's quick to set up, and gives the legal right to whoever you want to make medical decisions for you if you can't.
My mom volunteers with hospice, and has seen all sorts of situations where someone is incapacitated with no medical POA, and all sorts of power struggles ensue. Apparently it's especially important if you want your SO to be making the decisions, as opposed to your parents or other close family.
I guess I'm an oddball in that I haven't done much and am pretty much going with the flow for now.
We need to get a carseat to bring the baby home in. We'll be getting the Britax B-Safe 35, it should be in our hands in the next couple of weeks. If the baby is born before the seat comes, I don't think we can take him home that early, anyways.
I've been avoiding buying stuff, since this is our first (plus the first grandchild on both sides of the family). I'm expecting that we'll get a good amount of things we can use for Christmas, and there will be a small shower in January. Then we'll start buying the other items. We do have a crib, dresser, Lillebaby carrier, some clothes, and a lot of little stuff. I'm sure my Dr's office will be helpful with the breast pump - they're super helpful with these periodic packets of information. The one we received last week was info on circumcision, and a ton forms to fill out (hospital registration, "consent for vaginal birth", eight pages of info for a birth certificate, and some other stuff I'm forgetting about).
Anyways, people have been doing this for ages with far fewer resources, so I'm pretty sure that I can't mess this up too much. Plus I have my family and all the stores I could want really close by, so I can't imagine being in too much of a bind if we're "unprepared".
i kinda want to cry...i've done nothing! In the beginning of my pregnancy i got married, that took up alot of time. there's been a slew of stressers since then. we were gonna try to move before the baby came but that's not looking like its gonna happen...now the holidays are here and i've not even done christmas shopping yet! oh also, i'm trying to finish a baby blanket for my brother's baby which will be here on the 27th. on top of that we're putting in new floors throughout our whole house (bc that was a condition with our landlord before we moved since our dog tore up some of it). i've bought no clothes although we do have a handful of outfits from family being overly excited in the beginning. we have a cradle from my husband's childhood. i don't have bottles or diapers or anything at all. i don't even know if i'm gonna have a shower as no one has offered to host one and i've read from you ladies what a faux pas it would be to host my own.
I did start my birthing class this past weekend.
Granted, i'm due towards the end of March unlike alot of you ladies...but i just wanted to make it through the holidays and then start freaking out about everything i've NOT done.

you're suggestions will be super helpful though!
I'm laid back to a fault, but I say roll with it. If you don't have diapers & clothes when you get home from the hospital - send your husband to the store for some. If you're having trouble breastfeeding, you can get bottles & formula then, as well.
The baby needs a place to sleep, food (with luck your boobs will provide that), and a way to get home safely from the hospital. And lots of love. So focus on getting a carseat (sounds like you've got the cradle). I think everything else can be procured as you go along.

The good thing there is atleast my brother is getting me a super awesome travel system/car seat combo as a wedding/baby shower present. now that we know we're having a girl i finally picked out the color scheme i want and he's getting it ordered soon.
Thanks for that, i do feel better knowing i have one thing on my list that can be checked off
(i just realized the last line may sound smart ass-y but it was totally serious)

We also want to become official members of our church so we can have a baptism there.

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.
* Find Pedi
* Sign up for a few classes (SO and my work schedules make it impossible to take any together)
* Hospital Tour
* Finish Registries
* Possibly do nursery (were remodeling and baby will be in our room for a while so this might not get done till post baby)
* Figure out hospital bag
* Call ins for breast pump (has been on my to do list on our white board for over a month now)
* Reschedule WIC apt (cuz i over slept and missed my last one)
* Finish buying baby stuff after baby shower which literally could be anything and then put remaining baby stuff together (currently we only have a PNP)
* Get car seats installed and safety inspected (mom is getting these for baby shower at end of Jan)
* Book Maternity Photos (besides HDBD i have not taken any pictures and we really want something special to remember this by)
Bahhhh I'm sure there is plenty more. But i did pre register at the hospital today cuz i found i was able to do that online so check for that. Ugh

My mom volunteers with hospice, and has seen all sorts of situations where someone is incapacitated with no medical POA, and all sorts of power struggles ensue. Apparently it's especially important if you want your SO to be making the decisions, as opposed to your parents or other close family.
i kinda want to cry...i've done nothing!
