Can they be wrong? (Loss mentioned)

I've been on here since the start of my pregnancy and I have just found a lot of support and advice from all you ladies. I went through a lot last night and I just needed some words of wisdom. This is my first pregnancy. About a week ago, last Monday, I went to the emergency room about a very small amount of blood that I saw on the tissue when I went to wipe. They did an ultrasound and all the possible tests and they said everything was fine. I was nine weeks pregnant and I started bleeding some yesterday evening. At first I thought it was because of sexual intercourse with my husband but decided to go get it checked out anyway. I was there for 6 hours before they told me they couldn't find a heartbeat. The nurse who showed me my paperwork when I was getting discharged seemed to have a semi confused looked on her face because of my HCG levels in my blood and said that this wasn't 100% sure. That I needed to have a second opinion and needed to go get checked out again this week. The bleeding wasn't much. Not even enough to fill up half a pad. This morning I wiped and there was nothing. I'm feeling pretty emotionally destroyed right now and I'm not sure how to handle all this. I'm not trying to hold on to false hope, but is there any way that the doctor could be wrong about the heartbeat? How is it there one day and 5 days later it's just not? Need some words of wisdom here. Thank you, just feeling lost.

I'm so sorry you're in limbo. I'm confused, though... did they do an ultrasound? Did you see the screen? Did the doctor conduct the US, or was it a technician? The few times I had an US for my previous pregnancy, they always let me see the flicker of the heartbeat on the screen.

I hope you're able to get another ultrasound right away, so you can get to the bottom of this. It must be torture to wait. Sending positive thoughts your way.

  • How did they check for the heartbeat this last time? By doppler, transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound?

  • Transvaginal
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. I hope that you get a second opinion & good news. T & P for you.
  • If you're suppose to be 10 weeks, and they couldnt find a heartbeat, it doesnt look good. Your HCG levels will still be elevated until the miscarriage is comolete, even after the miscarriage/D&C, there is HCG in your blood for a few weeks. I'm sorry you're going through this. If a second opinion gives you peace of mind, do it.

  • How upsetting!  Since it sounds like at least some of the ER personnel were confused, definitely get in to see the OB practice ASAP and see what they can tell you.  My OB hates when her patients end up in the ER because the ER folks don't know as much about pregnancy.  Hopefully your OB can clear up the confusion and give you a firm answer.  ((Hugs))

  • So sorry.
I miscarried around 10 weeks, and it started with a little blood, but was a LOT by the next morning. Hope this can be an encouragement until you find out. Praying!!
  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I would definitely follow up with your OB. If they did transvaginal and couldn't find the heartbeat, than it doesn't sound promising. The ER isn't as skilled as an OB office in this, and they label most bleeding as a "threatened miscarriage". That is why it is recommended just to wait to see your doctor with any light bleeding or spotting. I hope you get some answers soon. FX for you!

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. Call your doctor tomorrow so that you can be seen by someone who has more experience. I hear a lot of bad things about the ER.

  • Last time I miscarried at 11 weeks and 3 days I had no bleeding. Just no heartbeat or any movement whatsoever. Found it randomly during a routine check up. Did not bleed for three days after and had to have a d&c done. Hcg levels stayed elevated in my blood for weeks, I want to say close to 8 weeks. Get a second opinion, I really hope you are going to have a happy pregnancy, however at this point it does not look too good.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. HCG levels being high doesn't necessarily mean there was no loss but I agree with other posters that it doesn't look promising. Please get an appt with your OB ASAP and update us. You and your family are in my prayers.
