Breastfeeding

Milk coming in?

Hi all,
I have been on the Bump for years, but due to a lot of issues getting pregnant I took a hiatus.  On Sunday morning I gave birth to my miracle IVF baby girl.  I am trying to breastfeed.  Things were going slow, in fact they kept us at the hospital longer on my discharge day to try to get my confidence up and to work with the baby's latch technique.  We have been home since Tuesday night and I have tried her on my breast as much as I can.  I was pumping after to make sure that I as getting all of the colostrum in case we hit a bump in the road.  Everyone keeps asking if my milk has come in, but everything I am being told by people (ie: rock hard breasts, hot breasts, etc) has not happened to me.  At the same time, yesterday when my daughter cried my breast began to leak as well as last night they were leaking.  The fluid is definitely runnier like milk and not as thick looking as the colostrum -- so I am thinking that my milk has come in.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I know that not all breast feeding situations are the same, but I need some reassurance.  I have put two calls into lactation at the hospital where I delivered, unfortunately, they are not too great at getting back to me in a timely fashion -- although they are great when I can talk to them.  Thank you!

Re: Milk coming in?

  • Does the baby seem to get satisfied?  Can you hand express some or pump some after the baby is done, if you get anything out its probably in...Maybe your a lucky one that didn't engorge!

  • Thank you!  Yes, I can feel hard spots here and there, but definitely not like bowling balls...and I have large breasts so I don't know if that is a factor.  My guess is that she is satisfied -- her diapers are wet and the ones with a bowel movement have transitioned to the proper consistency.  She doesn't scream that she is hungry and sleeps very well so I have to say that her tummy is satisfied.  Thank you for your reassurance....just like many people here, this is so new to me....let's not even get into me and the "baby blues" this week ;0)

  • My breasts didn't get rock hard until LO was 9 days old, but she had been gaining wt appropriately the whole week. Hang in there and congrats on your miracle!

  • With my first two kids it was very obvious when my milk came in. This time it was less noticeable. I'm going to say that yours for sure has come in :)  Have you seen milk in the corner of your baby's mouth? My little guy has milk running down his cheek or chin sometimes...her peeing and pooping is the true test that it has come in. You're doing great! Congrats!!!
