Holiday travel tips, tricks and support group

Hi all! I am gearing up for a 26 hr travel day from Singapore to Edmonton AB. I am not looking forward to our return flight where I will be doing it alone with the babe.

Things I have already done, booked a separate seat for LO on the longer flights. Reserved a bassinet. Plan on using the Ergo. A lot. Using playtex drop in bottles, squeeze tube baby food, snack bags with baby puffs. Medi bag with baby Tylenol, teething gel and cough syrup. Etc.

Any other suggestions and or tips? Should I also pack travel sized shots of baileys? Jk jk

  • Feed on take off and landing, it helps equalize the pressure in their ears. Pack of bag of favorite or new toys, brining them out one at a time. Don't be afraid to get up and walk the aisles if you need to, people would rather hear a happy baby close to them for a few minutes than a screaming baby at its seat for extended time. Don't expect the bathroom toilet changing stations to actually fit your baby, they are tiny. Pack an extra set of clothes for you in the carry-on as well as baby.

We have a six hour car rode to montreal and then back again. Dollar store toys for the toddler and I need to get car toys for the baby. He slept most of the way last time, we'll see how it goes this time around.

  • I'm traveling in April, not for the holidays, but I read to get a set of baby links and attach a bunch of different toys to it.  That way, if LO drops one, you're not trying to get it on the airplane floor while he's on your lap, it doesn't fall under the seats, etc.

Do you need a car seat when you arrive?  I think we're going to gate check our seat.

  • So glad you started this! I'm flying alone with LO to South America on Black Friday. It's a 6+ hour trip, I was planning to pack light to make things easier at the airports but I started packing tonight and I already filled two bags with LO's stuff. We are going to be away for 18 days and I'm considering only taking a pair or jeans and only three or four tops for me just so I can take everything she might need.
I didn't buy her a ticket so she'll be traveling in my lap, I hope I didn't make a mistake by doing this. I'm going to wear her and pray that she sleeps for most of the flight.

  • I feel the same way! Pack for the worst and pray for the best.
  • What you have done sounds great! We drove 24 hours (3, 8 hour days) to Texas with her and flew home (only a 4 hour flight). While driving we stopped every 2-3 hours if she was awake to feed/change and that seemed to keep her happy for the most part. On the flight home we booked our seats where there were only 2 seats side by side. We left early and she slept the whole time. Like a PP said if they are sleeping don't wake them to feed. Try not to panic if they do cry cause after all it's a baby and you have every right to be there--people can suck it up for a short period of time.
    Hope it goes well!
  • I've already booked her a seat thankfully DH's company gives us flight money home. We also paid extra to have the bulkhead seats and booked the bassinets. So we have lots of room together.
  • We just flew from PA to Florida with LO and most of my "tips" have been said. We only got to do the bottle at takeoff once but the other times she either was asleep or it didn't seem to bother her.

As for toys, we got one of the high chair toys that has a suction cup on the bottom and lots of things that spin and light up - that kept her very entertained (we put it on my mom's tray- she sat next to me- and LO sat on my lap so she could reach over to it). Whoever suggested the links for toys - that's genius. Definitely doing that if we travel with her again while she's little. Definitely bring extra clothes for you or anyone else who's traveling with you that would hold the baby - DH learned that one the hard way on our way home. He wore spitup for a 2.5 hour flight and subsequent hour drive home from the airport.

  • We just took DD on her 6th flight over Thanksgiving and we're gearing up for number seven in a little over a week. Everyone gave good advice. We have the links and they are great!

I would add, bring disinfecting wipes for when the toys fall on the floor and to wipe down the window and trays. My LO likes to look out and touch EVERYTHING!
  • We just found out that my husbands work is now giving us extra money for infants so we can buy them a seat. As a bonus they started it this year! So as I bought it and that we get reimbursed for it! Yeah!!
  • @KrystaJ‌ My LO used to hate his car seat so I kinda understand. It's awful trying to drive and listen to someone "begging" you to be let out! Mine fortunately outgrew it. I don't have any grand solutions but something small is the music. We got some Rock a bye Baby CDs. They are songs that have been made into lullabies. They have current pop songs, classic rock, specific artists, etc. They are enjoyable for you too because you can sing along. My LO seemed to calm down a bit when we blasted that. Good luck!!
  • @KrystaJ‌ I've heard some babies hate the convertible seat less, not sure if you switched yet

@Jazznit1984‌ we have flown a few times. It looks like you have a great game plan. My advice: relax, don't overthink it, and order a drink.

  • @KrystaJ‌ my daughter HATED the car seat until we bought this Little Einstein toy. She loves it!
  • Also, we try to time car trips for when she would normally nap.
