Whooping Cough - T&P Update in OP

Hi ladies, just got back from the doctor with Elias. They're running labs on him, but doctor thinks he has whooping cough. (Possibly croup, but, till the results come in it sure seemed like whooping cough to the pedi.) I'm pretty worried about my sweet little guy, and a bit confused since he had all his vaccines. He wasn't scheduled to get his 4 month boosters till next week due to his pedi being on vacation, and apparently that was the next round of pertusis booster.

Has anyone else had experience with whooping cough? I feel so terrible since this is something the vaccinations are supposed to prevent, but I guess nothing is 100% (and he wasn't fully protected since he needs that next booster.) Keep us in your thoughts and prayers please!

Update: Doctor called with the results today, and he's negative for whooping cough! Phew! So he just has a particularly nasty upper respiratory infection. The antibiotics should start getting him cleared up.

No experience, hope all turns out ok! I did have a friend whose baby had croup though. She had to give him a few breathing treatments but he was fine.

I'm so sorry! Hope your little guy is feeling better soon.

My mom works at a school and this fall she was exposed to someone with whooping cough. Since she was around DD, I contacted our pedi to see what if any precautions we should take, even though my mom had been recently vaccinated against whooping cough.

Basically, the pedi said a few years ago they reformulated the whooping cough vaccine to lower the number of kids who had reactions to the immunization. As a result of the reformulation, it is not as effective anymore, so even if you are vaccinated fully, you can still contract whooping cough.

As far as the vaccine thing goes, he's not fully vaccinated until he's had the full round of pertussis vaccines (I think there's 3). So at 4 months, he's not fully vaxed for whooping cough yet.

Thanks all, the doctor called a couple hours ago and said that the when he contacted the lab they said they only run that test on Monday/Wednesday/Friday. (Too bad they didn't tell him that sooner.) So for now, we're going ahead and starting antibiotics.

The good thing is, despite this Elias is pretty happy with life overall and has still been giving lots of smiles and little joyful shrieks. And I think he liked the medicine because it was cherry flavored and he's never tasted anything but breastmilk or his vitamin D drops before.

So hopefully tomorrow we'll know more, but I'm glad that at least he's currently comfortable! Thanks for all the kind words and info.

My LO had the same reaction to the cherry Tylenol! So happy he is at least in good spirits, hope your LO feels better soon.

@anightattheopera Sorry you had to go through the same thing! It sure is scary. One of the meds they prescribed (millipred) suppresses the immune system, so even though the doctor cleared him for daycare, we've decided to keep him home away from other kiddos till he's done with all the meds. No sense in taking the risk he could get another illness when he's already not feeling great.
