For those of you monitoring blood pressure...

At what blood pressure does your ob want you to call them or go in to l&d? My blood pressure was a bit high at my last appointment (140s/low 90s) and my OB said she wanted to see what it is on monday when I go back. I had mild preeclampsia with my son, but this was the first appointment with an ele ate reading this pregnancy.

Today, I've had a splitting headache all day. Before starting chiropractic care, I would get them monthly at least, but I haven't had one this bad in a long time. I remembered this could be a problem with blood pressure, so I went to the local pharmacy and checked - 132/88. High, but I didn't think too high.

I took a Tylenol and am resting. If it doesn't get better I plan to go back and test again, and if it is similar or higher I will call my doc.

I've tried googling specific blood pressure values without luck. I just want to make sure that a blood pressure like that combined with a headache wouldn't send any of you running before I choose to wait.

**disclaimer, I am not trying to use you as a replacement for my doc. I intend to ask her if things continue, just wondering if you would also wait to ask or if you would just call.**

Re: For those of you monitoring blood pressure...

  • I checked again and BP was similar. Waiting for the callback from the answering service.

  • Anytime I'm 140/90+ I get a discussion. I haven't been that high this pregnancy but once. With my first pregnancy I had hypertension.
  • I am supposed to call if my BP is 150's/90's. Dr said the diastolic (bottom number) is more critical. She told me knowing that my baseline has been and hasn't gone over 140's/ low 80's. This is definitely going to vary per practitioner and patient.

Your diastolic is high and in conjunction with the headache I agree that you should(I'm glad you did) call your Dr. Let us know how itgoes!
  • She said that the blood pressure was slightly high, and the headache could be something or just a headache. We decided to see how it goes for a while before I come in. My husband was gone and I was not able to rest as my three year old was very busy. I'm going to soak in a cool bath and give it an hour or so.
  • 132/88 is still below the lowest reading that is considered high so my
Dr wouldn't ask me to call in for that.

  • Mine sends me to the hospital once I am in my 160's/100's or so.  When I am 140/90 that is high but bedrest at home normal for me.  150's I call my doctor or if bad headache/sparkling lights in eyes and mid upper abdomen pain.  Each doctor is different based on your specific circumstances.  Please plan to have this conversation with your doctor.

  • The headache went away shortly after I posted. I was 90% sure it wasn't a big deal, but I wanted to check. At my appointment on Monday, I plan on having a more in depth conversation about what to watch for.

I'm guessing the reason we didn't talk about it last week was because it was only borderline high and it was the first time. She did not instruct me to test my pressures or warn me about headaches, so I assume she didn't see it as concerning.
  • I'm glad the headache went away!
132/88 would have been a super low reading my doctor would have been happy over, lol! But obviously I had pre-e and ran high. I think 140/90 tends to be the number considered "high" but it's still on the lower end of the high. Glad you called, though- if someone is concerned, it's a good idea. Hopefully your BP stays down.

  • For my Dr they want me to call for anything over 140/90 last night I was at a friends house and in just the two hours I was there I swelled so much I couldn't get my shoes on. I figured it was my BP. I went to the nearest pharmacy and it was 144/88, I waited 5 minutes and took it again and it was 138/84 so I just went home and went to bed. Thankfully today it was all better. I hope you don't have any more issues with yours.
  • Had severe Pre-E with my first pregnancy and have mild Pre-E with this pregnancy. It is mild only because I've been on bedrest since 25 weeks (currently 34wks). My doc told me to go to L&D if I get 3 consecutive readings of 150's/90's. I am high-risk due to history of Pre-E and advanced maternal age.

This is me too. This was when my OB decided it was time to induce DD2, combined with labs that came back as early pre-eclampsia. I was 37 weeks at the time, so she just didn't mess around because I was getting worse and worse pretty quickly.
  • My nurse gets concerned for numbers over 140/90. My HR is almost always up over 100, she doesnt like to see it at 120- which I have done a few times. Its always fine at the OB visits.... I would ask your OB, when does she want you to call? Mine would tell me to call for anything concerning, he hasn't been given any BP parameters, but I bet he would if I pressed. Good luck! :-) glad the H/A went away, I think your theory of chasing 3 yo is valid for causing h/a....

  • For those monitoring bp at home, did you purchase an electric cuff? I've been getting killer headaches that are usually related to elevated bp. When I'm at work I have a nurse take my bp manually, but I want to be able to keep a record while I'm at home. I'm not sure if it's worth buying an electric one and if they're reliable.

I did, they aren't super expensive either. But I'm so glad I have it. It's what alerted me that my BP was getting dangerously high with DD2. I was induced shortly after.
  • I don't have to go in unless I exceed 160/110. Either number. So if its 165/90, I still have to get checked out. Of course I get the reminder every time about headaches, floaters, upper right quadrant pain, sudden swelling of face, hands, and/or feet.

  • I had pre e with my second and I am so nervous to get it again with my 3rd. My bp has been good except the last couple of weeks it's keeps going up. It started at 132/90. My hands and feet have been swelling a lot more. My doctor didn't seem concerned. The nurse seemed a little more concerned then my doctor.
  • I had severe pre-e last time, but didn't develop it until 39 weeks and was induced immediately. This time my BP has been creeping up slowly over the past visits. This week at my appointment it was 131/89 then 140/85 when they rechecked and that was enough for my OB to run all of the bloodwork and I'm doing the 24 hour catch today. He didn't say a specific number to look for to call if it's high at home but just to look out for the already mentioned symptoms. I've had a migraine all weekend, but get those at times and my BP at home has been fine. We'll see what the 24 hour urine number has to say tomorrow... I'm not terribly optimistic.

  • I think 140/90 is my doctor's threshold for a call. I was diagnosed with preeclampsia and my pressures were running around 155/108, although they told me the bottom number was more important. Glad you turned out to be ok!

I also have a electric machine requested by my doctor.  I do not have the cuff on the wrist but the actual BP cuff like at my doctors office that goes on the upper arm.  I take it a few times a day and keep a lot for my doctor of the pressures and turn the log in at my twice weekly appointments.  Your doctor will tell you if you need to do this or not.  I am being induced at 37 weeks because of the BP.  Only 1.5 weeks left.  :-)
