1st Trimester

No vitamins?

When I found out I was pregnant I started taking prenatals right away. But I started feeling nauseous and even threw up some. So I didn't take them for a few days and noticed the nausea and throwing up stopped. I feel like I'm cheating my baby out of the vitamins he/she needs, but I don't want to take them until my doctor can explain to me why they make me feel that way...

Re: No vitamins?

  • Even when people aren't pregnant it can be normal for vitamins to upset your stomach. Try taking them with a meal, or at bedtime as many people find that helps. I take the gummy prenatal vitamins, and haven't had any issues

  • I didn't take vitamins for most of my first tri due to morning sickness, I tried 4-5 different brands with no luck. Just try and eat healthy if you can. Also, I took a separate small pill of folic acid only because I could stomach it. Baby will leech everything from you.

My prenatal has no iron in it and I've been fine. My iron levels were very high so I'm not concerned but I will get the doctor to keep an eye in them at my next appointment. I eat a lot of iron rich foods, so should be fine.

Were you taking them with food?

I agree with pps the gummies are awesome and easier to keep down. Make sure you keep taking them they are very important to your health and baby's health.
ETA I see they also make you sick. Try to eat prior and if that doesn't help you can call your ob for anti nausea meds.
  • Take them at night before bed rather than during the day. That works for a lot of people.
  • I take mine at night with food right before I go to bed. If I take them in the morning I'll just puke it back up.
  • I second the rainbow light vitamins. Very easy on the tummy
  • You could also try Flintstones. I had problems with my first pregnancy due to my pills and found those helped.
  • I take the Honest Company prenatal vitamins with their DHA and Omega and they are wonderful on my tummy. I believe they are coated to help sensitive tummies with digestion.
  • Make sure you are taking them after you've had a full meal. Perhaps even later in the day.

I felt sick taking them in the morning, even after breakfast. But for weeks taking them after dinner has worked great.
  • My sickness had been horrendous this pregnancy! I leave my prenatals on the nightstand & take it right before bed. They've never made me feel worse. I found that to be the best way. Good luck!
  • I was always sick to my stomach after taking prenatals no matter how much food I had eaten. I switched to Rainbow Light like the posters above and they are great! I've had no problems at all. Highly recommend.
