How to know if it's amniotic fluid leaking?

Hey all.

Earlier this evening I walk walking outside and slipped in the mud and landed on my knees then stomach.

I went to L&D to be checked out (I'm 31 weeks) and baby's heart rate and movements were alright over about an hour and a half of monitoring. They sent me home and said to keep an eye on bleeding/leaking or contractions/sharp pains and any decrease in his movement.

Since I've been home I've noticed I've been...moist(er) than normal but haven't noticed any gushes of fluid or anything of that nature. Is there any way to know if it's fluid? A certain odor? Color? I can wipe and the paper be wet but I don't see anything (no yellow or anything like urine). I'm keeping an eye on it right now but I was just wondering if anyone had any info.

Thanks!

If you are worried it is fluid, put a pad on and lay down. If changing position stops it, it's not fluid. If you fill the pad in under am hour, call L&D. Odds are, it is just extra discharge. I found amniotic fluid has a pretty distinct smell.

    Edited to finish my thought.

  • Sorry about your fall :( I'm glad you went to get checked out- but if you do feel more wetness then whats normal for you, I would def give L&D a call just for some advice, they certainly won't mind having you back in just to check it's not fluid. It will also put your mind at ease. Let us know how you get on.
  • It smells really distinct smell, like semen. If you're worried there is a super non invasive test the er does to check if your leaking, they just rub a little strip of paper, no internal exam
  • It's been a while since you posted. Did you head back in out did the moisture lessen?

  • When my water started leaking with DS, it came in gushes. L&D sent me home after testing negative, but I've since been told that a false negative is possible if it mixes with any urine. If you can fill a pad in an hour or so, it is likely amniotic fluid. I hope everything is ok!

  • I was worried about the same thing just a little bit ago. My OB told me that it is almost always the bladder leaking. He said that a good way to give yourself peace of mind is to take AZO. It's for preventing yeast infections, but it turns your urine bright orange so that you can know if it's amniotic fluid or just urine!
I don't know if that will be helpful to you, but it made me feel better! :D

That's quite a trick! Good to know
  • Thanks everyone. Yeah I haven't quite figured out that my gravitational pull is a lot stronger than it was pre-pregnancy. Lol.

I tried the pad and it wasn't enough to come close to saturating it and it didn't last long. I'm assuming it was just urine. I haven't had any other symptoms since and he's still moving around fine so I'm a little less paranoid now.

The Azo is a great idea for future concerns!
  • I hope you and the baby are ok!
