  • This sounds like a great idea - no shame in spraying your OB during delivery. Anything to get that baby out as early as possible, whether she's ready or not!

  • Why????

Just why, can I ask, does it seem so damn important for a few of you to force your child out before he is ready?

A due date is ESTIMATED!!! So your baby could be ahead of what you were told to be your EDD or they could be behind!!!!

Don't drink castor oil, google it. Seriously!

  • Seriously I am never trying any of these bizarre old wives tales tricks to get baby out. If your OB/MW hasn't recommended it to you, then you should NOT do it. Period!
Married my best friend 7/2/11 - Furbaby born 7/9/11 and brought into our home 9/1/11

BFP#1:   2/2/13 ~ exact m/c date unknown but around 3/20 at 10 weeks ~ diagnosed with PMP ~ D&C on 4/5 ~ TTA for at least 1 year due to PMP ~ cleared to TTC 1/14

    BFP#2:   2/7/14 ~ m/c 2/20/14 ~ possibly due to chemical pregnancy ~ TG no D&C is needed

Surprise BFP#3:  4/4/14 ~ super duper extra happy (and nervous) about this one - EDD 12/9/14!!!

John Joseph was born on 12/12/14 at 7 lbs. 11 oz.  He is the most beautiful rainbow baby we could have wished for!

OP, it can and does work for some women. When done right, and the body is ready, it can be very effective. And since it affects PE2 receptors when it comes into contact with mucous membranes, it has a known mechanism in the stimulation of labor.

I've used it twice and have nothing negative to report. Both times were a success. But, I knew how to take and prepare it to minimize other side effects and my body was very ready. I also had the go-ahead from my caregiver. It was the preferred option of the options I had.

But if you're asking people here my guess is you're not familiar with it and haven't gone over this with your caregiver.

  • Jesus who in their right mind would willingly take this?! Shit and barf your life away to induce labor. I'd rather stay pregnant and uncomfortable. Why would anyone think it's a good idea over waiting and maybe needing pitocin?!?!?? From now on anything with the words castor oil in it is immediately a 20 in my book. /end rage
Oh, I'd do castor oil over pitocin any day. Castor oil, like other stimulants that affect prostaglandin receptors, will not work if the body is not ready. The cervix needs to be ripe/favorable just like in pharmaceutical inductions (which can and do fail quite a bit and have their own serious side effects). When the dose is titrated and prepared the right way the side effects can be eliminated altogether.

  • I can't, I just can't justify taking the risks of that to go into labor. Probably has something to do with my fear and disgust for being sick but it seems like poison to me. I have had pitocin to help my labor with DS along because my membranes ruptured and I was not contracting enough, baby started showing signs of distress also. I felt much safer taking the medication in a hospital around trained and trusted staff rather than put my labor in the hands of castor oil at home.

But that's just me. I can't stand listening to people in threads like these who have no idea what they are even asking or wanting to get themselves into. Makes me ragey.
I understand what you're saying. There are risks regardless of the method used to induce or augment labor. It's just a matter of which risks each individual is comfortable with after weighing the options and literature. I can see why the pharmaceutical route is less concerning for some people even though they all have their own set of risks.

I never experienced vomiting, dehydration, nausea, stomach cramps or any of the nasty side effects with CO, but I knew how to take it to minimize those effects. Heck, I had looser stools (sorry, TMI) when I was taking EPO regularly (increase in prostaglandin production can cause diarrhea). One of its known side effects is loose stools or diarrhea. CO did its intended job in both cases. Explosive poo doesn't appeal to me, and the prospect of vomiting/nausea makes me really anxious, which is why I spent time researching ways to minimize or eliminate those potential side effects.

In the end, I was comfortable taking it; however, I know others aren't so comfortable with it from the stories they've heard. Some have good experiences with it, and others don't. The same is true for every method used to induce or augment labor. The route/protocol of a method matters a great deal -- low dose of pit vs. higher dose, or low dose of miso vs. a higher dose (oral vs. vaginal, every 2-3 hours or every 3-4).

I agree. It needs to be understood that it *is* a method of induction or augmentation. It isn't like sex, walking, eating a shit-ton of pineapple core, spicy foods, etc. Sex and walking are great for getting things ready, but they aren't likely to induce labor unless labor was imminent already.

But CO, it's one of those things, like any true method, that can be mismanaged if not done properly. It is rather aggravating when it's likened to other natural methods. It can work, but it is not benign like sex or walking a mile or two to get things going. It isn't something that should be done unless under the supervision of a caregiver.

OP, castor oil was discussed as an option at 42 weeks in my natural childbirth class but was strongly discouraged because it is very unpleasant and not worth the ugly side effects.
  • I think everyone needs to take a chill pill if you don't like the question don't click on the thread! I am asking because one midwife had told me it works an another wouldn't recommend it I was looking for advice! Not all the bitchy comments calm down!!!
