Intro/TTCAL questions for OB

Hello, ladies. I am new to this community, as I am experiencing my first miscarriage. My DH and I got married in June and decided immediately that we wanted to try to start a family. After 5 months we succeeded but only were able to enjoy the news for about a week and a half. I know it is too soon for my DH and I to TTC, but I couldn't find another community that would be applicable for me to pose this question. I have my first OB follow-up appointment post MC today to ensure that I am doing okay and to discuss what happened. I was wondering what sort of questions you all asked your OB's regarding TTCAL? Did you ask for certain tests to be done? Any advice is much appreciated!

If I offended anyone with any part of my post, I apologize. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings and I hope to eventually become a more active member of this community as more time passes.

I doubt they'll want to start any invasive testing at the point. From what I've seen doctors tend to start investigating repeat pregnancy loss after a 3rd loss. Some ladies will get that testing done after a 2nd loss but it really depends on the situation I guess.

I guess i would ask whether or not they plan to track your betas down. It would be a good idea so you can anticipate when you might get your AF or how long it might take for your body to start healing and your cycles return. In addition to that, I probably would ask about how long you need to wait until you can TTC again and what the protocol would be if you get a BFP. Some doctors will have you go in for betas in the early stages of a BFP and might give you an early viability ultrasound.

For the ladies here:

Did you have a D&C, use meds to pass, or did it pass naturally?

Ask your OB:

For an HcG test to confirm your level is down to 0 and perhaps an Us to check all tissue was expelled. Did they draw blood last time?

Get HCG and progesterone drawn as soon your pG next.

When you can start trying again, if you want to.

Ask yourself:

When do WE want to try again. Talk with your partner on this one.

Do I need professional help to cope?

In my experience: they didn't do any sognificNt tests until after multiple losses. They did want to know our blood type, and I had a general chem panel done to check levels such as vitamins and ANA because it runs in my family.

Welcome, and sorry for your loss. I just had my first appt after loss this week. The first thing we went over was when MC started, how much bleeding was involved, and how long it lasted. She did an ultrasound to verify if all tissue had passed. I was a crying mess and forgot many of questions I thought I would ask, and I wish that I had written them down before going in.

((hugs)) and welcome! So sorry that you are here with us but glad you've found the group.

Most of the questions have been mentioned. I think this was touched on earlier but if you don't know your blood type the doctor should take blood to find out if you are Rh + or - . If you are negative they will need to give you a shot or there could be problems with future pregnancies. My doctor took blood for the test even though they knew my blood type just to be sure.

It is also worth asking if your doctor has any referrals or contacts with mental health care providers with experience in loss. My midwives have a connection with two counselors who specialize in reproductive issues including loss. Even though I didn't end up calling them it was great to know I had the info in case I needed it.

I second this. I keep a list of questions on the notepad app on my phone as I think of them.

Thank you everyone. Just to follow-up: appointment went well with OB. My hubby and I asked many questions and got great feedback from my doc. She wants me to get my beta levels checked again next Wednesday to ensure that my levels continue to drop. No US or exam was necessary, as she believes I am passing everything well naturally (unless levels come back with little to no change, then she will want to follow up with an exam). She told us that it may take a couple weeks for my cycle to regulate itself, but once that happens we have the all clear to TTC again. I was happy to hear that if we succeed then they want to keep a closer eye on me. Thanks again for your support and helpful advice! It was definitely appreciated by myself and my DH

So sorry for you loss, and hopefully you won't be here too long! I just had my first MC last Friday and I was able to pass everything naturally. Bleeding is just tapering off now, ugh. Glad your appt went well, and just wanted to say that here, you don't have to be alone
