Canadian travelling to states at 32 weeks

so ! Since last December family has had a trip booked to Florida keys for end of December. Looks like I will be 32 weeks pregnant when we go. I just missed the cut off for absolute coverage of my medical benefits. After 31 weeks it's case by case and the insurance company does an investigation at the time. My pregnancy has been uneventful, and a good one. No risks involved. Thoughts on going ? I'm totally on the fence and just like to hear :) thanks

  • If your doctor ok's it then I say go for it. Wear comfy clothes for the trip, get up and walk often, stay hydrated and have fun.

  • I will be 32 weeks in the keys as well and I am really not worried. The only thing I have thought about is where I would go if I had any problems. And I hope it is warm!! :)
    You had one job:

  • Do you hear the recent story about the million dollar baby? You should go but make sure you are covered 100% even if it means paying extra for coverage.

  • Yes the issue is IF something were to happen. I've researched and no additional insurance companies will for sure cover 100%. My company is like maybe coverage lol. Hope that makes more sense . And yes, totally heard about Canadian who went to Hawaii and had her baby at 6months pregnant. She came home with $900,000 medical bill.
  • What company are you with? I was with desjardins when I was pregnant with DS1 and I was completely covered until 35 weeks 6 days to be out of country.

I'm with someone else now, and won't be going away this Christmas but I'm pretty sure it's the same coverage. I just got home from a month in Florida and was fully covered, although I'm only 29+6 now.

I say go, have fun! Especially if you're having an uneventful pregnancy!

  • Look into buying additional insurance for sure, but that isn't the main concern. It isn't about YOU being covered it is about your unborn BABY being covered. We just got back from the US and we were unable to find coverage for our unborn baby (should he be born). A baby born early is an expensive baby, so while your delivery might be covered the care for the baby likely won't.

If you're just going for a week or so and you're low risk and there isn't any indication that you'll deliver early then I think I'd likely go, if I were you.

But know, that you are taking a risk, like @mishka29‌ said.
