December 2013 Moms

I never post.

I actually don't log in here very often, so hello!  but, here I am today looking for some help.  My LO is 11 months and doesn't shake his head no.  He's interactive, babbles, says mama, dada, crawls, responds to his name, etc, but doesn't nod or point.  I'm going to ask his pedi at our one year apt, just wondering if anyone else is in this boat?

Thank you!

  • My 11 month old sounds similar and it definitely isn't sometime that's on my radar to worry about. He doesn't nod at all, occasionally uses his index finger to interact with something but not to point across the room, and only shakes his head in a "get that thing away from my gesture" (similar to the dramatic turn-face-away gesture when he doesn't want to eat something), not as a "no" in response to a question. The other babies we hang out with don't consistently do those things, either.

I was curious after reading your post, and the Mayo Clinic says your baby "might" become skilled at "various" gestures, including shaking his head or waving, between 10-12 months. Does your baby clap or wave or anything like that? If, by the time of the 12 month visit, your baby isn't doing anything you would consider a gesture, it's probably worth mentioning it to the doctor for your peace of mind, but at this age, I don't think the baby is behind if he isn't doing any one specific gesture. Also, babies tend to be ahead on some things and behind on others. It would be normal if your baby didn't have any words at all right now, so if he's saying mama and dada but not shaking his head, that sounds like normal variation to me.

  • I'm not a big poster either but just wanted to say that my baby points, shakes her head, and is very interactive, however doesn't crawl!  Wants to walk though.  My point is that every baby is different :)  I'm sure your pedi will say the same thing.

  • My kid points sometimes but doesn't shake his head. There is a huge range of "normal", so give it some time. :)

  • Like others have said, "normal" consists of many things right now.  Mine doesn't say anything except random gibberish, but he does shake his head(fairly new skill), point, craw(just started for real crawling like 3 weeks ago), pull up and a few other things.

  • Thank you to the ladies who took me seriously, appreciate the feedback.

To the others, really?  It was an honest question.  Why so much hate! Geesh.

Read the thread.  There's unnecessary comments.  I just asked a question after something I read on parents.com.

I was looking for some support/feedback not an attack on my intelligence.

Obviously you weren't that worried if it took you 15 days to come back and read responses.
