Anyone dealing with hypertension (high blood pressure) or borderline hypertension?

I've never had this issue before, but ever since my first midwife appointment, I've had borderline hypertension (readings around 140/90).  I never had any blood pressure issues with my first. This issue is stressing me out considerably (i know -- totally counter-productive).  Wondering if i'm alone or if there are others out there also dealing with this?  What are you doing to try and manage your blood pressure?  Is your doctor / midwife concerned about pre-eclampsia?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Sometimes it's just nice to know you're not alone in this struggle.

  • High risk check in is on Wednesdays (every other still probably until mid January :) )

I also struggle with high BP and was on meds early in this pregnancy, but am off them now as my BP is only maxing out in the 140's/80's, my last pregnancy I was consistently in the 160/90-100 range and still made it to 39 weeks and didn't develop pre-e until after delivery (yup that can happen, :) ) try not to stress, lots of people can develop gestational hypertension since your body is regulating more blood for you and baby, usually it gets high around 12 weeks then will come back down and after 20 it starts creeping up again (or at least that's what my MFM has told me). Also if it has been consistent since early in your pregnancy they usually consider it more of a chronic hypertension vs pregnancy induced which is more likely to lead to pre-e. Either way they will keep a close eye on you, if you go on meds they will monitor you more closely in the third tri and you can look forward to 24 urine tests :)

Come over to the high risk check in next Wednesday the ladies are full of great advice and dealing with similar things :)

  • I have always had great blood pressure.. Until this week at 15 weeks. 150/90. Doctor ordered a 24 hour urine and some other baseline blood work. I am going back in a few days for a recheck. It is really stressing me out, which doesn't help!!
  • I have slightly elevated blood pressure. My OB thinks I am an undiagnosed hypertensive. My bp at my appt on tuesday was 144/80. She had me do the the early 24 urine test to see how much protein I spill normally. That way has baseline numbers to compare to if she feels I may pre-e. She also did blood work. She for the moment does not consider me high risk but she does want a me to have a consulatation with a high risk dr at the hospital the day of my anatomy scan on 12/30.
At that point I will passed the 20 week mark which is the only time you can become pre-e and need to be delivered.
I try and stay away from processed and high sodium foods, I drink a lot of water and try and relax. We are not going to medicate me at this point.
I hope this helps a little.
  • Yes! Never had these problems with my first. I've been running 149/91 at my ob appts. It's so stressful. My doctor said it's probably stress about the appt and not to worry until after 20+ weeks. I've always ran low, so this problem is so new to me.
