Underweight and having a hard time gaining!

I hope I am not the only one!! I was underweight before starting IVF, but gained the needed weight before Dr would let us proceed.  The first round resulted in a BFP, but now I am losing weight! I know I lost some of it during the 2WW because I was SO stressed (I am a stress NONeater..) But now I have lost another 2 lbs after getting the positive results! I have increased calories by 600 and the scale hasn't budged....anyone else out there who can relate?! I am just worried my body fat is too low to sustain pregnancy....

Feeling scared and alone!

Re: Underweight and having a hard time gaining!

  • I can't relate, I'm pretty chubby but try drinking an ensure 2-3 times a day. That's what they do in the army when people are underweight, and try to eat heavy on the carbs if you can stand it!

Hope you start gaining! Good luck!

  • Try adding healthy fats to your diet - half an avocado on a slice of toast/add it to your sandwich, snack on nuts throughout the day, have a boost/ensure drink in the afternoon as a snack, and continue to eat properly. Your baby will take what it needs from you.

I'm starting off pregnancy at a healthy weight, but I've lost 7lbs since my BFP because I've had no appetite/got sick with a stomach bug this week. My midwife isn't concerned at this point, she said to eat what I can tolerate and stay hydrated.

  • My daughter got pnemonia when she was four and lost a ton of weight and my grandmother told me to make her chocolate milkshakes out of heavy whipping cream and melted milk chocolate. It works. Lol
  • I'm in the same boat. When I found out I was pregnant, I started loading up on carbs, but now that MS has kicked in, I can barely eat, and I'm probably losing weight again. Oh, and to make matters worse, I'm still nursing my 17 month old. My doctor had me do a bunch of bloodwork, and it looked good. I'm assuming you've had this done, too? They can check your iron levels, sugar, etc. and tell you whether you really need to worry.

  • Thanks!! Yes, my bloodwork is fine. My BMI is just pretty low. I seem to be more worried than my Dr so I will try to relax a bit and eat!!
  • I gain weight easy so I can't relate. But maybe those food bars designed of you to gin weight could help, for lack of a better reference Do you remember those bars they used to sabotage Regina with in Mean Girls? But if your doctor isn't worried you should try not to be worried to since your worrying stops you from eating. Better said than done, I know.

  • I think you will be fine. Im 5'2 and was only 91 pounds pre pregnancy, although I have gained 1 pound. My mom and sister were just as thin, gaining less than 15 pounds their entire pregnancy and gave birth to full term healthy babies. Eat what you can, and don't stress. Good luck
  • Also remember that there isn't much weight gain in the first or second trimester. The third is where it really packs on. I'm sure you will be fine. If your dr is concerned at any point, they will intervene with a high calorie diet and bed rest, most likely

  • I always lose around 20 pounds during pregnancy. Its happened twice and is looking the same for this pregnancy. Both of my other babies weren't effected by the weight loss and are both very healthy! Don't worry if you don't gain sometimes it's normal!
  • I'm in the same boat, pregnant with twins to boot, and have just been focusing on eating good fats and carbing it up. I also switched to whole milk and full calorie yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. it's a small step in the right direction. Boost or Ensure are good extra calories as well, I add them to my smoothies since I am not a fan of their taste. If you are feeling especially concerned, just ask to speak to a nutritionist, your OB should be able to refer you to one. Good luck!

  • I'm thin and lost weight in first tri with LO and am losing with this one too due to severe MS.  It's ok.  You will gain in 2nd and 3rd to make up for it.  Your doctor isn't worried, so don't you worry either!
