FTM Twin Pregnancy Intro

Hi everyone!  I've been lurking here for a few weeks now and finally decided to post an intro.  I'm currently 13w pregnant with twins conceived via our 2nd FET after trying for about 3.5 years.  The news was not terribly surprising (given we knew the odds when you transfer two), and frankly at the first ultrasound I was just relieved that both had healthy heartbeats!  We have since had another ultrasound yesterday, and we are starting to tell people.  It's still a bit overwhelming at this point, but given all we have been through we are thrilled at the success.

I have a question for you ladies.  What is the recommended strategy regarding maternity clothes for a twin pregnancy?  I don't have much of a bump yet, but my pants are starting to get tighter.  I was hoping to pick up a few things within the next few days so I don't wake up one day and not have pants to wear to work.  However I know that eventually I will get too big for regular maternity clothes.  Is the best strategy, then, to buy a few pieces at a time as needed until I figure out how fast my belly is going to grow (instead of buying a bunch all at once)?  Do you recommend buying my current size in maternity clothes (as recommended for singles) or buy a size larger to try and make it stretch until I size out of regular maternity?  I admit I'm a bit lost so any advice is appreciated.

Most of my maternity clothes worked the entire time and I bought my current size in pants and a size up in tops. I think the type of clothing matters more. I found the low waist pants did not work past the second tri and I was very uncomfortable the last few weeks so all I wanted to wear were maxi dresses and leggings. I did swell quite a bit, though and had pre-Eclampsia. I am average height and was also told by several nurses that I am very short waisted so I think I would have felt this way even with a singleton. The clothes that were uncomfortable at the end were great for the first few weeks post-partum, though, and a few favorites that can pass as non-maternity have actually made it permanently into my wardrobe. I got nearly all my maternity clothes second hand or on clearance so I didn't feel bad about buying more to keep up with my belly growth and outgrowing a few things.

  • I think leggings are a must. I agree with buying a size up in tops. I almost needed to buy bigger tops because they were getting short but then I had my babies at 32 weeks so I didn't end up needing to.

I also mostly have the high waisted pants and those were very comfortable. I also wore my yoga pants a lot but didn't fold them.

  • Congrats! I agree with pp high waisted pants and the longer tops or a size larger. I ended up going 38 weeks and was struggling to find long enough tops. Dresses and tops that went with leggings were great. Also sometimes undershirts can make tops last longer. As soon as I got home from work I changed to yoga pants.

  • Congrats! I didn't need maternity until about 18 weeks but it was summer so I had a ton of dresses that worked. My first purchase was bigger bras! As it got cooler I bought a few new work clothes but kept it cheap ordering from old navy and motherhood. I was put on bedrest at 27 weeks so I haven't had to buy hardly anything but I agree with the other ladies full panel yoga pants and maternity leggings are what I live in!!!!

  • Thanks for the input ladies!  I was able to do some shopping yesterday and got several things on sale (including some fleece lined leggings).  I think a lot of the items can work post pregnancy as well, which makes me feel better.  I took your advice, and bought my pre-pregnancy size mostly.  I will play the tops by ear for now and buy a few in a larger size later on if needed.

  • Buy as you go. I stopped wearing pants in third tri, though bc nothing was comfortable. I also just made it to 34w, so I was only slightly bigger than w my singleton when I delivered.

    Agreed w sticking w pre-pg size.

  • Im 34 weeks (twins), my high waisted maternity pants (prepreg size) still work well. The only problem I'm having is with tops. Some are too short/ tight that I bought in pre/preg size. The stretchy maternity shirts still work well. The only thing I wish I had bought (but think its a little late in the game for me now since I don't have long left) are maternity tank tops. I would definately invest in a couple of those. :-) & Congratulations! (We did FET as well)
