Increasing pumping at work

Today is my second day back at work. Yesterday while at work DS had (3) 4oz bottle every 3 hours and I was able to pump enough to keep up with that. Today I am also on track to keep up with it, however I have noticed when I pump at 1:30 I only get about 2 oz. But when I pumped at 10:30 this morning I got 5 oz. I don't understand why there is such a difference between the two times. And would like to know any tips to try and increase my output at different times of the day. Any tips would be appreciated!

Re: Increasing pumping at work

  • Your body usually makes more in the morning and then decreases during the day so don't get too concerned with not having a consistent output. I usually get more during the first pump then pretty equal the second and third pump. If you feel you are "running low" during low times I have pumped until I slowed, stopped, wiped everything off and started again and ended up getting an extra ounce or so with a second let down. Obviously this means you are pumping an extra 5 minutes or so.

  • It's very normal to have different out puts throughout the day. I pump 3 times.

    9:30am- I get 6-8oz
    12:30 I get 4-5oz
    3:30 I get 3-4oz

Your afternoon pump will typically be your lowest yielding pump.
  • My pumping output also changes throughout the day, but very inconsistently.  Some days my first pump has the highest output, sometimes it's the last pump of the day.  I only pay attention to total pump output- if it's low for the day I sneak in another session.
  • My afternoon pump (3 o'clock) always sucks. My LO takes 4.5 oz bottles every 3-4 hours while I'm at work. I almost never get a whole feeding in the afternoon pump session. Luckily my morning (6-8 oz) and lunch (5-6oz) sessions make up for it. I make sure to drink 3 liters of water at work every day too. Sometimes I'll have a really crappy output day for no reason at all & sometimes I'll get way more than usual...I've learned that the boobs, they do what they want.
  • Thanks for the advice, yesterday I was able to pump a little more than I have been. I'm starting to focus on the total overall instead of just one seesion. MIL is watching DS so I have her tell me everytime she feeds him so I know how many ounces I need to aim to pump.
