If you had to take the 3 hr. glucose test?

I just got the call that my 1 hour came back like 4 points higher than what it needed to be to pass. (Same thing happened w/ DS#2 and I passed the 3 hour.) I go next Wednesday for the 3 hour and the nurse that I talked to told me to really watch what I eat/drink between now and then. No sugar or carbs. So my question is, were you told the same thing? I don't recall that being the case last time and I would think they would want you to stick with your normal routine so that it wouldn't sway the results. Thanks!

Also, I am a vegetarian and have no clue what I am going to do food wise. I don't eat eggs and most of my protein comes from things that are also loaded w/ carbs. :(

Re: If you had to take the 3 hr. glucose test?

  • I jsut completed and passed my 3-hr, I was not told to watch what I ate. They only told me to fast from midnight on.

    Good luck!!

  • I passed my 3 hour and was not told to watch what I eat, I did fast the night before as per their orders.
  • I was not told to watch what I ate. Thanksgiving was a few days before my test and my doctor said to eat whatever I wanted.
  • Fast 12 hours before, water is fine were my only instructions.

  • The diet I was told to follow for three days before was way more carbs and sugar than I normally eat so I didn't really follow it. I was worried it would leave me shaky. Not sure if I passed yet or not.

  • I passed my three hour test and I was only instructed to not eat 8 hours before I went in. I will totally admit I'm not the healthiest eater out there, and from what I researched and heard is that if you have it, you have it. You shouldn't try to trick the test because it could be bad for you and baby if you got false results. I also heard you can't really fool the test anyways. Good luck!
  • Nope, they said stick with my regular diet to get valid results and not a fluke. And now I have GD... :-( But I knew it was coming.

  • Thanks everyone! I am starting to think this phone nurse doesn't seem to know what she is talking about, lol. I called the other day to ask what else I could take for heartburn (besides Tums) and she totally gave me the wrong info.

  • Take this with a grain of salt... I have read somewhere that if you're on a low carb diet, you actually want to stop a couple weeks prior to the glucose test so you don't get a false fail.

  • I just took the 3 hour on Thursday and passed. They didn't tell me to watch what I ate. I even had two fudgecicles the night before...
  • They told me to watch what I ate.. I did and still failed. If you have it, you have it. I don't think you can fake out the test. I felt like the only number my diet the day before helped was my fasting number (which is the only draw that I passed).

  • There's a lot of conflicting information on this - some people are told to basically "carb load" in the days leading up to the 3hr, while others aren't told to do anything special. @hopefulsprout is correct that you really can't make much of a difference in just a few days - if your sugar is high, your sugar is high, and you shouldn't try to trick the test into a false negative, since that's potentially detrimental to your LO.

I'll tell you also that I failed my 1hr, by only one point, and passed the 3hr with no problems. GL!
Totally agree - I actually read some interesting research that said that restricting carbs the days before could give you a false positive for GD. It essentially said to eat extra carbs, and that there wasn't anything you could do to pass if you had GD; and not much you could do to fail if you didn't. Good luck! I got a 165 on the one hour, and passed the three hour easily (80, 145, 127, 119).

  • I failed my three hour and watched what I ate starting about 3 days prior. I still failed it is what it is sucky! Lol good luck
  • I have never been told to watch what I eat. I figure if I have to change my diet to pass the test then that is silly. I want to eat like I normally would and see if I pass. If I don't pass then I will do what I need to do. With DD had borderline GD, this time I passed the 2 hour with flying colors. I didn't even come close to my numbers last time. If you have it you have it.
  • I had to take that lovely test too because I failed the 1 hour test by one point. I tried to get out of it since my friend past hers with a higher score. They gave me no directions about eating. I was in a panic for the next 5 days reading everything on the internet and may have cried a few times too ( hormones I tell you). I got really sick after the 1 hour test and the 3 hour was awful on my stomach and my veins. I ate normal and passed with flying colors. Bring things with you to keep you distracted. It helps to keep your mind off everything.

Be careful about cutting out too many carbs the evening before. While your body is fasting overnight your liver converts glycogen into glucose and dumps it into your bloodstream. If you're already starting at a deficit, you could skew your fasting number. Also, trying not to stress before the test helps as stress can increase your glucose level.
As others said, eat how you normally would and don't try to trick the test.
My doctor does the two hour test instead. I failed the fasting level by a few points. I've since been testing my sugar four times a day and had all within acceptable range without any real change in diet. Because diabetes is an issue in my family, I think I psyched myself out. However, I'd rather know, monitor, and be safe than sorry.

ETA: If your results from the three hour come back not-so-good, don't beat yourself up. I did that for a few days. You didn't earn it, it's hormonal. In most women, once the placenta is birthed it goes away with those hormones.

  • crispywheats,

First of all....OMG, that was my favorite cereal growing up!! Do they still make it???

Second, I cut back on carbs the day before. Not completely, but I really went back and forth with what I was told to do by my Dr.'s office and what I thought I should do (and the advice I got here). I also ate 2 tums 4 hours after I was supposed to start fasting (oh the heartburn!). My fasting number was a bit high at 97. Then it went down from there 168, 102 and finally 86. So I passed, YAY!

Thanks for all of the advice ladies!

They don't still make it! It's very sad, I loved it too!
My mom has always called me Crispy Wheats because I'm an 80's baby (when the cereal was around) and I'm a Chris with a maiden name beginning with P. Super dorky and mom-awesome all at once.

Hooray! I'm glad it went well!
