TTC After a Loss

Medication

Anyone else on any kind of medication that could potentially cause MC, but have no choice but to take it? I have epilepsy, and take a medication called Zonegran. While I haven't had a seizure in nearly 10 years, my neurologist is still concerned that pregnancy could cause an epileptic episode (and then MC), while OB is concerned that this could potentially have been the cause of my MC. She upped my folic acid intake to 4,000 mcg.

My BFF is 5 mos. pg and is on seizure medication. It sounds like a similar situation. She is also on a large dose of folic acid. She had one seizure about a decade ago. While there was an increased risk, I think your ultimate health is more important than risking being off the meds. So far everything is fine in her case.

I'd be curious to know which medicine they have her on. Thanks for the info!

  • It may be the same one. I know it starts with a Z. You can PM @Pastrypixie3‌ and ask her. I don't think she'd mind answering.

  • As a warning, she doesn't log in often, I don't think. So don't be surprised if it takes a while for an answer.

  • Not the same type of med, but I'm on an SSRI (Zoloft) and there are some studies out there that day it increases miscarriage risk. But some more recent studies are now sort of debunking those older studies, so who knows? I rely on my psychiatrist's recommendation and she does not think its a good idea for me to go off the meds.

@bookishmomma, at my last OB appt before the loss my OB prescribed me Zoloft and my psyc was on board with it too. I was concerned, but both assured it's okay. I was also using Xanax while TTC which the doc said to stop immediately. That's the only med they had me stop.

OP- my opinion: you must keep yourself in consideration too. Healthy mama = healthy baby. It's so hard to try to find the "reason" it happens, and trust me. I've not too much research on my morning cocktail of meds, but the professionals know best. My opinion.

I would say to continue educating yourself and never let the doc brush off your questions. I'm a firm believer you're your own advocate and you have every right to inquire.

  • I'm on Lamictal for my GAD, which is an anti-seizure med (but has many off-label uses). Low incidence of a specific birth defect. Tried to go even down by 1/4 of a dose with bad results recently. So yes to Healthy Momma = Healthy Baby with fingers crossed. In my professional, I don't even play a doctor on TV opinion, you need to do what is healthy for you unless a doc specifically says noooo, waaaay. GL!

  • I am also on Lamictal and the docs have me on a high dose of folic acid as well. I was on Keppra and Vimpat before but was weaned off and put on Lamictal because it is one of the lower risk AED's. Pretty much I agree with everyone else: you and your doctors have to ultimately determine what is best for you because that is what will be best for the baby. It's a frustrating balancing act and I wish I had more wisdom to impart :) just don't be afraid to ask ALL the questions so that you feel like you have made the most informed decision you can. Peace of mind is priceless. Feel free to ask any questions! I'm an open book ;)
