Not interested in food?

I can't get my kid to eat more than a few bites of purée. Veggies, fruit, cereal-- he just ends up fussing or throwing his thumb in his mouth. Any suggestions?

Re: Not interested in food?

  • He may not be ready. Food before one is just for fun. He should still get all that he needs from formula/bm :)

But, in the mean time, you could try different brands of foods? Also, you might want to look into baby led weaning. Some kids like to feed themselves :) just a few thoughts.

  • Oh and I should add, babies may not eat but a few bites at first.

I get all of this, however when left with my SIL-- he eats a whole ounce or container of food. Maybe it's my technique lol

  • DD2 didnt show any interest in food until this week. I've been giving her finger foods at lunch and DH will attempt a puree occasionally at dinner. Wasn't until last week that she figured out how to get the finger food to her mouth (she still isn't eating it) and only started being interested in her purees this week. I always make sure to breastfeed 30min before giving her food because if she's hungry she isn't going to want solids

  • My son lost interest and I read online teething has a lot to do with it.

Like PP said, its just for fun. I did notice he's more willing with chunks of food over mash/puree/cereal, and it scares me a little. But the BLW FB group and watching some YouTube helped a lot :)

most store bought purees either tastes gross or like nothing at all -- earth's best brand has pretty decent flavor but i've found that roasting your own fruit or veggies and pureeing it gets better results with flavor / baby liking it. definitely taste everything yourself before you give it to baby though and you'll probably have similar responses :) tip: plum organics sweet potato and peas are pretty gross.

i've also been adding a really small amount of cinnamon to fruit purees and it's had a good reaction. he hates cereals. loves yogurt (yo baby from stonyfield). loves home made pureed roasted pumpkin. likes pureed apple, pear, mango.

    hope that helps a little!
I only have bought bananas this far. The other foods have been steamed and puréed by yours truly. They are just one food, not mixed. Carrot, butternut squash, pears, peaches, peas, green beans. Mamas been busy cooking!

The ped recommended doing his second and next to last meal of the day... So that he isn't starving and that I know he will be full before bed. I will try the 30 min suggestion.

Busy indeed! Have you tried roasting instead of steaming? Might taste a little more interesting?
    Nope. Worth a try!

  • @mrstobe20122 - I also second BLW. We do it here, but I do spoon feed her oatmeal in the AM. She doesn't like to be spoon fed. Period.

Maybe try roasting a sweet potato or baking an apple to soften it up and see what LO does with that?
