Bottles: how much?

How do I calculate how much milk to put in a bottle for L if J wants to feed him? He's only had a few bottles, and I always put 4 oz in them bc that's what the LC recommended, I assume based on his age and feeding frequency. Now he is 4 months and eats about every 3 hours.

  • I have always done 4 oz. If he is still hungry after 4oz, offer another 2.

  • KellyMom has a calculator, but that's just an estimate.

I think the rough rule of thumb is 1oz/hr, or around 24oz a day. But if your baby feeds less frequently, they might eat more than that 1oz/hr you're gone too.

Since I have someone else watching G 4 days out of the week for a short time, I just try to keep at least 3 bottles stocked in the fridge, anywhere between 1-3oz each typically. There have been times he'll eat 3oz in the 1.5 I'm not around, or go the whole time without a bottle.

    Sorry, I'm probably not helpful.
  • R has been getting 4oz bottles since about 4 months. He takes that at daycare, but at home sometimes only takes 2-3 from it.

  • Another one for 4 oz.

I'm pretty sure that's what I sent to daycare for about 7-8 months.  Near the end we shifted to 6 oz (2 bottles).  But he was also shifting to nursing on both sides on the weekend.

  • Breast milk changes as your child grows, so unlike formula they don't really need MORE just because they're older.

That said, I also recommend 3-4oz

  • Okay, thanks! We'll stick with 4 oz, and I'll try to freeze a couple of 2 oz bags as backup in case he still acts hungry later.
