Moms who are or were in school with a LO?

The job I currently have really anyone can do and on top of that it's terrible. I've been thinking for a while now that because I'll be a SAHM when LO#2 is born in April and probably won't be returning to work until DS is at least in preschool that this is an opportunity to upgrade my education. When I do eventually return to work I want to be able to get a job that is more fulfilling, pays more and I can feel good about.

So far I've met with a career counsellor at the university I went to for my diploma and found out I need about 50 more credits to get my BA. I'm excited about the idea of going back to school. I loved it when I went before and did really well but this was before DS. Right now I'm pretty scared to take the plunge. I just don't know what it's going to be like this time around with two kids and schoolwork on top of that.

So, my question is to moms who are in school right now or have done school with a LO at home. What is/was your experience like and what kind of course load did you manage?

Re: Moms who are or were in school with a LO?

  • I'm currently one semester away from finishing my Master's Degree. I started in January 2012, before I was pregnant with DD. I'll admit it was much easier to get things done before she was born--but it is totally doable to be a mom and a student.

My biggest piece of advice is to be smart about planning your time. For example, the semester that I was pregnant with DD (and working a full and part time job) I only took one online class. Now that she's a little older I'm taking two in-person classes. I would also look for a program that is flexible and designed for adults. My program has a ton of online classes and the earliest that classes start is 4 pm. It's nice because it allows me to work around a busy life as a mom.

Also, build a support network. DH has been great and supports my decision to further my education 100%. He watched DD so I can go some place quiet to study or work on projects and papers. We don't have a ton of family nearby, but I do have an aunt and uncle and cousin who help me out tremendously when DH is at work. Know your schedule ahead of time and plan out all the days that you have conflicts and need care. Also, talk to your professors and let them know your situation. I've found that most are very understanding (though some exceptions) if I've had to miss anything due to DD.

    Good luck to you :)
