important question please help!!

I smoked pot daily before I found out I was pregnant. Its obviously still in my system. If I tell them I smoked pot before I found out I was pregnant what will happen? I don't want them to try and take my baby. Will cys get involved? What do you think is going to happen? I'm so scared!

Re: important question please help!!

  • "They" probably won't even ask. I was never asked with any of my pregnancies. You should be fine.

If you quit as soon as you found out you were pregnant it shouldn't be a problem. The CPS cases I've had in the NICU mostly involved moms that either still used whatever drug or recently quit, during their pregnancy. CPS doesn't automatically come and take your child, they aren't horrible people. They are looking out for the welfare of the children they're called to monitor. The worst that will happen, most likely, is that it'll be entered into your medical history. That's it. If you continue to smoke pot during your pregnancy you can have serious repercussions for baby's health so it's great that you've quit! Stay with it.

Edit to add: Don't let your fear of CPS keep you from being honest with your doctors. Definitely let them know that you smoked pot daily. It's important for them to know about it so they can monitor appropriately. If you are otherwise a responsible adult and can provide a safe, loving environment for your child no one will have any reason to look into your situation.
  • Honesty is best policy. It will look suspicious if you deny, but your urine test indicates otherwise. However, I'm not even sure if/when they test for drugs. But, if you are honest then at least your conscience would be clear.
  • Thank you guys so much I don't plan on picking back up again. I'm way to worried about my baby. I quit smoking cigarettes intanstly as well as eating my bad eating habits. I hope all goes well

Awesome, good for you. Seriously. Another little life is depending on you now to make the right decisions and it looks like you're doing good so far :)
  • Thank you I'm not gonna lie its hard but its so worth it! I want nothing but the best for my baby! I want to give him/her what I never had in life. I'm willing to do whatever I can to make sure he/she is happy and healthy

Correct me if I'm wrong too, but with HIPAA, doctors cannot disclose past drug use anyway to the authorities assuming you have stopped, right?

If we have a reason to be suspicious of drug use we are required by law to notify social services, who then notify CPS or the proper authorities. It counts as something like child endangerment and doesn't fall under HIPAA after that. I've had to do it a few times when the moms come on the unit reeking of pot or acting like they're high on something.

ETA But no, you're right-- past drug use that has been stopped is not information we can pass on. Key word being "stopped."
  • That's understandable no one should be using anything while pregnant. That's putting a life at risk and is no good. They deserve the best. Its basically forcing the child to do drugs that's truly sad and brings tears to my eyes when I even think about people doing that!

It really is heartbreaking. I don't think people realize quite what the baby has to go through.
