In my first pregnancy the "goal" wasn't to lose weight, but I did. I'm a bit larger than you. When I got pregnant I ate way healthier, kicked soda to the curb, and drank a crap ton of water every day. I also had GD later in my pregnancy so I was on a strict diet and didn't give in to cravings. On the day I delivered I was 8 lbs under my pre pregnancy weight. After I delivered and shed all the excess water weight, I was a little over 25 lbs under my pre pregnancy weight.
I don't think the goal should be to lose weight at all. Focus on eating well balanced, getting some exercise, and WATER WATER WATER. Weight itself isn't really the concern, and I'm surprised your doc would frame it that way.
This time, my new ob basically said because of my size I need to be careful and not gain a bunch of excess weight- nothing about losing weight. Weight loss diets and pregnancy are not good bed fellows. The plan is the same as last time. Focus on health, not weight.
So to answer your question about how to go about this when all you want to eat is: EAT! But make good choices. Munch on carrot sticks, butter free popcorn, etc instead of chips. If you have a chocolate craving, have a piece of dark chocolate and not a bar of milk chocolate, etc.
I've basically been trying to do similar things to what you advised, to eat things that are healthier and replacing most of my usual snacks with fruits and veggies.
I'm wondering if the goal will change once I actually see my OB. For now I'm just hoping to avoid GD and keep a healthy body for baby to thrive in.
I had been working with my endocrinologist to lose weight, I am heavier than you, & am down quite a bit - but when we found out we were pregnant he said not to focus on losing weight. I have to check blood sugar regularly and make good food choices, but he specifically said not to try to lose weight by restricting calorie intake like I had been.
I'm seeing a dietician who wants me to maintain. I was 277 when I found out I was pregnant. I was 274 at my 6wk appt with the dietician and 271 when I saw her on Wednesday. she was upset at the 3lb loss and told me I need to make sure I'm eating enough. It's hard trying to get the calorie goal she wants me to have. As well as 165 grams of protein.
At my first ob appt they told me it was ok to lose during first Tri especially because I'm drinking water now and eating less junk. And I cut out coffee and booze.
I weigh less then you op, my dr also told me I should try to take advantage of my faster metabolism and lose weight. I have an appointment with a nutritionist in about 10 days. I have always struggled to loose weight, I used to be like a string bean but now I can't get it off. I know my biggest problem is the lack of fruits and vegetables I eat but I really can't stand them. Hopefully the nutritionist can help.
My RE had me on a very calorie restricted diet before I was pregnant. I had lost a little weight but I'm afraid I gained it back over the holiday I'm not sure what I should do now? I'd love to talk to a nutritionist but I have no idea where to find one. My old ob told me I should try to lose weight while pregnant but I'm just going to try to eat healthy and hope for the best.
My doctor told me that I shouldn't lose weight, but that I have to be very careful about gaining. Unless directly under doctor's orders/care It isn't healthy to decide to lose weight while pregnant.
Thanks for this! I was 250 when I found out and I'm dreading to hear what my ob will say but I've been doing what you guys have said..making better choices and tons of water. My first pregnancy I ate everything in sight so now I'm not giving in to everything. In fact I noticed I can't eat a whole lot at a time but small snacks feel better. Good luck ladies!
With DD I was about 250 when I got pregnant. I ended up opting to have my GD testing done at 12 weeks and sure enough my levels were already slightly elevated. With the help of a dietician I put myself on a fairly strict diabetic diet, I walked 30 minutes / day and drank loads of water. I still let myself enjoy an all out cheat meal once a week or a nice yummy piece of cake. I lost 25lbs by the time DD was born. I am trying to do the same with this little on as I am still overweight.
I am in the 190-200 range and I was told to just keep the gain minimal, around 15 pounds. That's how much I gained last time but I always lose a little in the first trimester from being sick.
I agree with PP about maintaining healthy eating habits and adding 30 minutes of walking daily. With my first pregnancy I was put on a 1200 calorie diet to try and control my diabetes, I lost 20 pounds the first trimester. I didn't like the Endo who put me on the diet and saw the RN the rest of my pregnancy, I gained the 20 back plus another 20 before giving birth. In the beginning I find it hard to eat healthy, I just want something that appeals to me and stays down. Sorry for hijacking your post.
I am 300 pounds and was told to keep my weight gain to 11-20 pounds total, with most of it in the final trimester. If I had been told to try to lose weight by the midwives, I believe I would be seeking a second opinion. Your body is literally creating a new life right now, it's not the time to be dieting for weight loss.
I haven't gone to my first prenatal visit but I'm 5'5 and 209 so I'm positive ill have to lose some weight. But if this all day nausea and committing doesn't stop I don't think I'll have a problem lol

Holy shit! 165 grams of protein? That's kind of a buttload, isn't it?
I'm heavy too, but they didn't tell me anything about my weight. I'm not trying to lose, but I'm definitely trying to not gain either until much later in my pregnancy.
I am in a similar situation, I'm 5'9 225# and I'm supposed to maintain, which will really result in a loss after the baby is born. For me, idle snacking is the hardest thing to overcome. I've found that if I brush my teeth any time I eat a snack or a meal, and especially if I have something sugary or salty) it keeps me from wanting to keep munching because that lingering taste is gone. My dr. also suggested drinking lots of water before a meal and never finishing a meal faster than 20 minutes so that I feel full faster. I also try to do little things to be more active, like taking brisk walks, using the stairs, and parking far away from things (in addition to strength training 2-3x/wk at the gym...gotta get to work on my puny biceps if I'm going to be carrying a little one around!). The 1st trimester fatigue is making the fitness part a challenge, but generally, I've found these things to be helpful so far. I lost about 40# before TTC...we got a BFP the 2nd month of TTC, and so while I wasn't able to lose as much as I wanted, so far it isn't creeping back. Good luck...you can do it, you're not alone!
Re: Anyone else out there supposed to lose weight?
I dont plan to gain much.... better habits for LOs benefit should make it fairly simple.... although a bit of a challenge!
