Latex allergy?

So I just got around to swinging by walgreens last night for a flu/tdapp shot. Minor sting, felt fine, went to bed. When I woke up my arms were still stinging and when I pulled off the bandaid there were welts and bumps all around the edges of the bandaid! (Injection site was fine) I just looked and while they feel fine there are still some blisters outlining where the bandaids were. Never had a reaction like that before... Could it be a latex allergy? I've had blood drawn, a CS, etc with no probs so im thinking no... But just thought it was weird!

  • I have the same allergy and i'll have to take the bandaid off right away. Even if I take it off right after walking out the door I still have a red bandaid looking shape for a couple days.

It's not true that most bandaids are latex free. Brand name band-aids are not latex free. We have to buy them for our kids because our son had the same reaction to a band aid as a baby. The package has to say latex free. Sounds like a reaction to me though. And allergies can suddenly pop up out of no where, no matter how old you are or if you've been sensitive to it before

ETA: and the latex is actually in the adhesive, not the fabric
  • All bandaids make me itch like crazy. I must also be allergic to the adhesive. But when I got an IV at L&D a month ago, I didn't react to that. I guess that's a good thing!

@Firefly3911, I'm not sure how you interpreted that?? I wasn't referencing you though. I have no idea what your medical situation is.

edited again: I just know that in bandaids that contain latex, the latex is in the adhesive not the fabric. If you're allergic to the adhesive and not the latex, then it would make sense you can use sensitive bandaids and be fine. My son has to have "latex free"
  • I have the same reaction to bandaids.  For awhile there, I was getting blood drawn a few times a week (fertility treatment) and I always asked them to wrap my arm with the stretchy gauze rather than an adhesive bandage. Made all the difference!
